‘Sunflower Surprise’

‘Sunflower Surprise’ is a display of sunflowers in the Flower Dome in the Gardens by the Bay. The event is a collaboration with the High Commission of India in Singapore, commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations.

Introduced to India in the 1960s through agricultural research, sunflowers have since become both an oilseed crop and an ornament plant.

Together with the display of sunflowers were information boards giving information on the city of Jaipur, and the culture and customs observed in the city.

Jaipur is the capital and largest city of India’s Rajasthan state. It is also known as the ‘Pink city’ for its trademark colour. That warm rose hue has since become inseparable from the city’s identity.

Hawa Mahal. Also known as the “Palace of Winds”, Hawa Mahal is one of India’s most recognised and photographed landmarks.

Amer Ford Courtyard. The Amer For Courtyard once served as both the administrative seat and pleasure palace of the Kachwaha dynasty.

The traditional string puppet theatre of Rajasthan.

Elephants. They were once indispensable to royal and military life in Rajasthan. Rajput rulers rode them into battle and through Jaipur’s streets in grand processions.

Peacocks. Native to the subcontinent, the peacock was declared India’s national bird in 1963.

Auto Rickshaws. They are the city’s most affordable form of hired transport. Each vehicle can ferry two or three passengers with ease through narrow lanes and the broad avenues.

The sunflower display is quite impressive. Besides the different variety of sunflowers, marigolds, chrysanthemums, tagetes, snapdragons, hydrangeas, canna…. are also on display to add a bit variety to the display.

‘Sunflower Surprise’ is now on until the 16th of November. Admission fees apply. Adults pay $12 SGD, Seniors and children below 12 years old pay $8 SGD.

“Alpine Adventure”

This is the first time the Flower Dome is creating landscapes of Switzerland’s alpine regions. On display in the Flower Dome are over 50 varieties of alpine and seasonal plants, and begonias in vivid shades of red, pink, and white. Besides that, the flower display also showcase Switzerland’s iconic landmarks and traditions with information on them.

A centerpiece at the entrance of the Flower Dome – a model of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Not to be critical, but I think they could have done a better job.

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps. It’s an iconic landmark located above Zermatt in the Southwest of Switzerland. It is one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe, and said to be the world’s most recognized, and most photographed. On the flip side, over 500 climbers have perished on its slope since the first historic ascent.

Model of Medieval churches, the spires of which marked Zurich’s Old Town.

Geneva’s flower clock was created in 1955 as a celebration of the city’s two proud traditions; fine watchmaking and horticulture. The clock is supposedly built from a bed of soil and over 3,000 plants and fully functional. Flowers are replanted four times a year, timed to seasonal changes.

Public fountains in Switzerland. Such fountains could range from simple spouts above wooden troughs to elaborate carved stoned towers

Cheese from the Alps. Swiss cheese produced in their home regions using traditional methods passed through generations. The three AOP (‘Appellation de’Origine Protegee or Protected Designation of Origin) Swiss cheeses are Appenzeller, Emmental and Raclette.

Alpine Adventure is presented in collaboration with Switzerland Tourism, and supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore, SWISS International Air Lines, Travel Switzerland, Zürich Tourism, Geneva Tourism, Adelboden-Lenk-Kandersteg Tourism, Glacier Express, and Gornergrat Railway.

All in all, it was a very impressive display. The display is now on until the 12th of October. The Flower Dome is open from 9am to 9pm. Admission fees apply. Adults pay $12 SGD, Seniors and children below 12 years old pay $8 SGD.

Flower Dome

The Flower Dome is one of the attractions in the Gardens by the Bay. Temperatures in the Flower Dome are maintained at Spring-time temperatures – 23C to 25C. In this way, any time you visit the Flower Dome, you will see lovely, colourful blooms.

The Flower Dome holds the Guinness World Record for the largest glass greenhouse! The column-less dome is covered with 3332 glass panels, and it can accommodate up to 1,000 people. It features a flower field with a changing display of flowers of the season, every six to eight weeks, and eight other gardens, namely The Baobabs, Succulent Garden, Australian Garden, South African Garden, South American Garden, Olive Grove, California Garden and the Mediterranean Garden. These eight gardens exhibit exotic flowers and plants from the Mediterranean and semi-arid regions from five different continents.

Isn’t it amazing, finding plants from all over the continent right here in the tropics? Here are some of the flowers you will see in the dome.

Flower dome is open from 9.00am till 9.00pm.

Gardens By The Bay

The Gardens by the Bay is, without a doubt, Singapore’s number one tourist attraction, as well as a favourite of the locals. A nature park spanning 101 hectares (250 acres) of reclaimed land in the Central region of Singapore, “it is part of the nation’s plans to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city”.

The Gardens by the Bay was voted the 8th best attraction in the World according to Tripadvisor travellers’ choice of 2024. Entry to the Gardens is free. But to visit the attractions in the gardens like the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, Floral Fantasy, OCBC Skyway and the Supertree Observatory – these require admission tickets which you can buy at the ticket counter or online.

If you are visiting the Gardens for the first time, I would suggest you go for the whole package. Spend a leisurely day at the Gardens – if you have the time.

Work in the number one tourist attraction in Singapore is always in progress. As such, there are always new additions to the garden, a new event, a new display, or something you hadn’t paid attention to in previous visits. In this way, they encourage visitors to return.
