Building a Better World

You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful. - Marie Curie

Living

We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Ah! this beautiful world ... Indeed, I know not what to think of it. Sometimes it is all gladness and sunshine, and heaven itself lies not far off. And then it changes suddenly, and is dark and sorrowful, and clouds shut out the sky. In the lives of the saddest of us, there are bright days like this, when we feel as if we could take the great world in our arms. Then come the gloomy hours, when the fire will neither burn on our hearths nor in our hearts; and all without and within is dismal, cold, and dark. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

In civilized life, where the happiness, and indeed almost the existence, of man depends so much upon the opinion of his fellow-men, he is constantly acting a studied part. The bold and peculiar traits of native character are refined away or softened down by the levelling influence of what is termed good-breeding, and he practises so many petty deceptions and affects so many generous sentiments for the purposes of popularity that it is difficult to distinguish his real from his artificial character. - Washington Irving

Success

Success in life could be defined as the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals. Success is the ability to fulfil your desires with effortless ease. And yet success, including the creation of wealth, has always been considered to be a process that requires hard work, and it is often considered to be at the expense of others. We need a more spiritual approach to success and to affluence, which is the abundant flow of all good things to you. With knowledge and practice of spiritual law, we put ourselves in harmony with nature and create with carefreeness, joy, and love. - Deepak Chopra

Food for Thought

For Google+ readers, please click on the link for an easier read….

It’s easy to feel uncared for when people aren’t able to communicate and connect with you in the way you need. And it’s so hard not to internalize that silence as a reflection on your worth. But the truth is that the way other people operate is not about you. Most people are so caught up in their own responsibilities, struggles, and anxiety that the thought of asking someone else how they’re doing doesn’t even cross their mind. They aren’t inherently bad or uncaring – they’re just busy and self-focused. And that’s okay. It’s not evidence of some fundamental failing on your part. It doesn’t make you unlovable or invisible. It just means that those people aren’t very good at looking beyond their own world. But the fact that you are – that despite the darkness you feel, you have the ability to share your love and light with others – is a strength. Your work isn’t to change who you are; it’s to find people who are able to give you the connection you need. Because despite what you feel, you are not too much. You are not too sensitive or too needy. You are thoughtful and empathetic. You are compassionate and kind. And with or without anyone’s acknowledgement or affection, you are enough. - Daniell Koepke

Your intention sets the universe in motion. The universe flows in the direction of your intention, and so it is important to be clear on your exact intention in any situation. If you are absolutely clear as to your intent, your subconscious success mechanism will support you in getting there. Most people encounter problems in creating the kind of life they want because they have not clearly determined where they want to go, or visualized what it is going to look like when they get there. Life

Life and the world, or whatever we call that which we are and feel, is an astonishing thing. The mist of familiarity obscures from us the wonder of our being. We are struck with admiration at some of its transient modifications, but it is itself the great miracle. What are changes of empires, the wreck of dynasties, with the opinions which supported them; what is the birth and the extinction of religious and of political systems to life? What are the revolutions of the globe which we inhabit, and the operations of the elements of which it is composed, compared with life? What is the universe of stars, and suns, of which this inhabited earth is one, and their motions, and their destiny, compared with life? Life, the great miracle, we admire not, because it is so miraculous. It is well that we are thus shielded by the familiarity of what is at once so certain and so unfathomable, from an astonishment which would otherwise absorb and overawe the functions of that which is its object. - Percy Bysshe Shelley

This view that women are somehow inferior to men is not restricted to one religion or belief. Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths. Nor, tragically, does its influence stop at the walls of the church, mosque, synagogue or temple. This discrimination, unjustifiably attributed to a Higher Authority, has provided a reason or excuse for the deprivation of women's equal rights across the world for centuries. At its most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities ... The truth is that male religious leaders have had – and still have – an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. - Jimmy Carter

Success

People who think achieving success is a linear A-to-Z process, a straight shot to the top, simply aren't in touch with reality. There are very few bona fide overnight success stories. It just doesn’t work that way. Success appears to happen overnight because we all see stories in newspapers and on TV about previously unknown people who have suddenly become famous. But consider a sequoia tree that has been growing for several hundred years. Just because a television crew one day decides to do a story about that tree doesn't mean it didn't exist before. - Donald Trump

Death

Even if those who take their own lives feel they have no choice – indeed, they often tragically believe their family and friends will be better off without them – the death rarely appears inevitable to those left behind. Feelings of anger and guilt and abandonment invade them, as if love should or could have prevented what happened. Survivors relive, over and over, the last days and months, even years, before the suicide, seeing now the signs that were missed, which they believe they should have recognized. - Susan Sterling

It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things. - Daniel Handler

Success is in the student, not in the university; greatness is in the individual, not in the library; power is in the man, not in his crutches. A great man will make opportunities, even out of the commonest and meanest situations. If a man is not superior to his education, is not larger than his crutches or his helps, if he is not greater than the means of his culture, which are but the sign-boards pointing the way to success, he will never reach greatness. Not learning, not culture alone, not helps and opportunities, but personal power and sterling integrity, make a man great. - Orison Swett Marden

The zest for life of those unusual men and women who make a great zealous success of living is due more often in good part to the craftiness and pertinacity with which they manage to overlook the misery of others. You can watch them watch life beat the stuffing out of the faces of their friends and acquaintances, although they themselves seem to outwit the dense delalys of social custom, the tedious tick-tock of bureaucratic obfuscation, accepting loss and age and change and disappointment without suffering punctures in their stomach lining. - Edward Hoagland

Happiness

Sharing a story on happiness, which I came across on Facebook.

A beautiful, expensively dressed lady went to visit a consellor to seek out happiness. she said she felt that her whole life was empty, it had no meaning.
The conusellor called over the old lady who cleaned the office floors and then said to the rich lady, "I am going to ask Mary here to tell you how she found happiness. All I want you to do is listen to her."
So the old lady put down her broom, sat on a chair and told her story.
"Well, my husband died of malaria and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody - I had nothing left. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, I never smiled at anyone, I ever though of taking my own life.
"Then one evening, a little kitten followed me home from work. somehow, I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten in. I got it some milk, and the kitten licked the plate clean. Then it purred and rubbed against my leg and, for the first time in months, I smiled.
"The I stopped to think, if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could make me happy.
"So, the next day I bakes some biscuits and took them to a neighbour who was sick in bed.
"Every day, I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy.
"Today, I don't know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I've found happiness, by giving it to others."
When she heard that, the rich lady cried. She had everything that money could buy, but she had lost the things which money cannot buy.
The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are; but on how happy others can be because of you.

Love

For Google+ readers, please click on the link for an easier read.

It is not the healthy, the confident, the proud, the joyous, the happy, that one must love – they have no need of one’s love! Arrogant and indifferent, they accept love only as homage that is theirs to command, as their due. The devotion of another is to them a mere embellishment, an ornament for the hair, a bracelet on the arm, not the whole meaning and bliss of their lives. Only those with whom life has dealt hardly, the wretched, the slighted, the uncertain, the unlovely, the humiliated, could really be helped by love. He who devotes his life to them atones to them for what life has taken from them. They alone know how to love and be loved as one should love -- gratefully and humbly. - Stefan Zweig

ABC of Quotes

Paperback: Support independent publishing: Buy this book on Lulu. E-Pub: Support independent publishing: Buy this e-book on Lulu.

‘ABC of Quotes’ is another compilation from my collection of quotes. This book contains quotes on various topics / subjects, alphabetically arranged for easier reference. Like my other books, this is available in E-Pub format and Paperback.
Quotes reinforce our thoughts, ideas, beliefs and opinions. And it is a nice feeling when we find our thoughts or opinions expressed by someone else more eloquently.
The beauty about Quotes is that they never go out of date. They are timeless – as applicable today and hereafter as when they were first uttered, some of them were spoken centuries ago.

“A collection of anecdotes and maxims is the greatest of treasure for the man of the world, for he knows how to intersperse conversation with the former in fit places, and to recollect the latter on proper occasions.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Friends

For Google+ readers, please click on the link for an easier read.

Close friendships are one of life’s miracles – that a few people get to know you deeply, all your messy or shadowy stuff along with the beauty and sweetness, and they still love you. Not only still love you, but love you more and more deeply. I would do anything for my closest friends, and they would do almost anything for me, and that is about as spiritual a truth as you can get. - Anne Lamott

Best friends are a source of constant support in our lives. Be it sharing secrets, exchanging advice, planning the future or just killing time doing nothing – every moment spent with them is a memory to be cherished forever. It always feels great to have your best friend around since she makes life worthwhile just by being a part of it. So cherish your best friends and let them know how special they are. - Unknown

Food for Thought - The Book

Paperback Support independent publishing: Buy this book on Lulu.   E-PUB Support independent publishing: Buy this e-book on Lulu.

'Food for Thought' is another compilation from my collection of quotes. The quotes here are a bit longer than the usual single or two lines proverbs, aphorisms, maxims or axioms. Hence, I called them 'Food for Thought'
There is a lesson, a message in every one of these quotes. Sometimes the meaning might not be obvious until you have read it a couple of times and pondered upon it for a while, and sometimes the meaning becomes clear only after you have undergone certain life experiences.
Life is short and we do not have enough time to learn all the lessons in life by ourselves. However, we can get a head start in life, by paying heed to the words of wisdom, and advice of the wise people before us.
