Cloud-spotting and Sunset

A few days before I left Benalmadena, I was fortunate to see a lovely display of clouds followed by the sunset as it went down behind the mountains. It was quite a spectacular moment.

This summer in Benalmadena has been rather warm and there were clear blue skies on most days. Hence, I didn’t get a chance to see a colourful sunset, until towards the end of my holidays.

In an earlier post, I have said I like cloud-spotting. Serious cloud-watchers are able to identify different types of clouds, and learn about the weather. I am just interested in watching cloud formations and still not an ‘expert’ in clouds. However, I do know that clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of them. Besides that, clouds reflect heat and keep us warm at night. During the day, clouds shade us from the sun.

The Earth is constantly recycling water through a process called the water cycle. Water evaporates and becomes water vapour. The water vapour rises to the sky and attaches to the dust and particles to form clouds. When the clouds are too heavy, it will release the water (rain), and there will be another water cycle process.

Anyway, I managed to catch the magical sunset from the balcony of the apartment. I watched the clouds float into the path of the setting sun until sunset. It was awesome. Of course, I took loads of photos. They will be some of my favourite holiday pictures and memories.

You only get a colourful sky when there are clouds during the sunset. Colourful skies are a result of the clouds reflecting the sun’s rays. What sort of colours we get depends on what sort of clouds are in the sky, and also how sunlight interacts with molecules and small particles in the atmosphere.

Here are the photos I captured of that sunset – from the clouds floating across the sky, and into the sunset.

Cloud-spotting

Clouds fascinate me. I keep an eye on them when I am out on my walks. They also help to keep my mind off the distance of the walk. Sometimes, I am rewarded with beautiful cloud formations.

Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of those reasons. Besides that, clouds reflect heat and keep the ground warmer at night. During the day, clouds shade us from the sun and keep us cooler.

I spotted the following cloud formation on one of my walks. They are not exceptional, but still interesting – to me at least.

Clouds

Clouds are water vapour mixed with bits of dust, ice or sea salt making them look like fluffy cotton. Clouds are constantly on the move. Propelled by the wind, and influenced by sunlight, they move across the sky creating scenes like a painter painting on an empty canvas.

People do not look up to the sky often enough to notice the changing clouds from moment to moment. Cloud-spotting is a cheap, and entertaining pastime.

Cloud-spotting

I always keep an eye out for the clouds in the sky when I am out on my walks. It helps to keep my mind off the distance. Sometimes, I get to see interesting cloud formations, although most of the time, the formations are quite mundane, nothing worth writing home about.

Cloudy Skies

Cloud-spotting is the observation of clouds as a recreational activity. The sky has unforeseeable clouds. So, cloud-spotting will never be dull. It is also a cheap, entertaining pastime. There are many types of clouds. If you know them well enough, you may be able to tell if there is going to be rain. Some photos of cloudy skies spotted on my holidays.

Dancing Clouds

Do the clouds look like they were dancing to you? They certainly look like they were having a great time dancing in the sky to me. Maybe they dance because they were ‘forced’ by the wind to dance. Or maybe it was Mother Nature painting. However, they were most probably results of a natural phenomena that were a result of dependent origination.

And they danced into the night.

Cloud-spotting

Clouds, propelled by the wind, float across the sky, looking very much like cotton wools, forming all sorts of shapes and sizes. Somehow this always fascinates me. They can be quite spectacular if the light hits them at the right angle at the right time of day.

On the balcony, I had a clear view of the sky outside. Sometimes, I got lucky and was rewarded with some absolutely beautiful cloud formation or light shows.

I caught the following recently. It is not the most beautiful thing I have seen, but it was still interesting to watch the clouds float across the sky. Cloud-spotting is never dull.
