Nice Shots/Views

Hat Yai – a quiet and laid back city, is a haven for those who like to shop, eat, and go for massages. In the city itself, besides shopping, eating and massages, it doesn’t have much to offer. However, away from the city, there are many hills and the top of the hills offer lovely views of the city below.

Here are some nice shots from my Hat Yai trip. And with that, I round up my posts on my recent visit to Hat Yai.

Mookata Dinner

I had my first Mookata dinner whilst in Hat Yai. I had seen people having Mookata dinners before, but I didn’t know it was called that.

Mookata is a Southeast Asian cooking method, originating in Thailand. It resembles the Singapore hot pot or Steamboat dinner. There are also Mookata restaurants in Singapore, but somehow, none of my friends have suggested that we should try it.

The difference between the hot pot dinner and the mookata dinner is that – with the hot pot dinner, all the cooking is done in the soup or broth, whereas in a mookata dinner, there is a ‘dome’ in the center of the pot where the meat, usually thinly sliced pork, muttom, beef or chicken is cooked. Vegetables and other ingredients are cooked in the soup, or broth. You can cook the meat in the soup too, but that is not the purpose of the Mookata.

In the center of the meat platter, there is a chunk of pork fat. This is used to ‘oil’ the dome so that when cooking the meat, they will not stick to the pan/dome.

Streets Of Hat Yai

Hat Yai, the city in Southern Thailand near the Malaysian border was surprisingly quiet. There were not many people on the streets, and most shops were empty. I wonder how they can afford to stay in business. I guess they depend a lot on the tourist trade. Overhead line cables

The mind boggles at the mess of cables. How do they tell which line is which? It must take them a long time to trace a faulty line.

As you can see, there were not many people, or hardly any people on the streets.

Food In Hat Yai

The Hat Yai trip – apart from the one day that we went sightseeing, the rest of the days were shopping and eating, and for some, going for massages. In between the big meals, there were many little meals and snacks.

This was one of the big meals.

This was the night, food street market. The street was lined with stalls selling all sorts of local food and delights. You just stroll along, and if you see something you like, you buy some.

Food stalls in the mall, like those in the street selling all sorts of desserts and snacks.

Somewhere to rest our tired feet after all the walking. Have some ice-cream...

On the last day of our trip, we came across a restaurant operated by a Malaysian Chinese. The food they served was very close in taste to those back home. Because of that, we were, for some reason, very happy about it. I guess after a few meals of foreign food, we miss the familiar taste of food of home.

Khlong Hae Floating Market

The floating market was the last destination of our day trip Hat Yai.

“A floating market is a market where goods are sold from boats. Originating in times and places where water transport played an important role in daily life, most floating markets operating today mainly serve as tourist attractions, and are chiefly found in Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India.” - Wikipedia

Floating markets are a novelty and the city’s star attractions. It is a unique experience for the tourists – buying something from a passing boat. Even if the tourist isn’t interested in buy anything, the colours, and atmosphere make it a photo worthy experience.

Sampans lined the waters near the walkway selling a variety of delicious local food and desserts. The floating market in Hat Yai is ‘stationary’, unlike some floating markets where the boats travel along the river.

Uphill from the floating market, there are stalls selling souvenirs and a whole range of stuff – shoes, tee-shirts...

There are also food stalls for those who prefer to sit and eat in comfort.

After a walk around the floating market and seeing how sales were carried out, we had something to eat at the stalls, before heading back to the hotel. It was quite a full day and some of us were understandably tired.
