Mynah Birds

Mynah birds originate from Africa, India as well as Southeast Asia. There are many types of mynahs, but generally, they are divided into two main groups – hill mynahs and common mynahs. As the names imply, hill mynahs are usually found in the dense nature areas, whereas, common mynahs are usually found in open grassland and areas occupied by humans.

Mynahs can be loud and annoying. They can be quite invasive pests. But they are also intelligent, and some can mimic human voices – especially if they are kept as pets from young. The hill mynahs are more sought after as pets. I guess they are more ‘refined’. The common mynahs – well, they are common, and can be loud, invasive pests.

Aphorisms

Proverbs, maxims, adages, and cliches are different forms of aphoristic statements that gain prevalence from generation to generation and frequently appear in our day-to-day speech. These are the words of wisdom, of the sages, gurus, philosophers… the wise men before us who have been through life’s hard knocks. If we take time to examine their words, we would surely benefit from their wisdom.

These images are not mine. They are from Facebook Pages, and Whatsapp messages.

Macro Flowers

"Earth laughs in flowers." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Flowers add colours, and liven up a place. Fragrant flowers fill the atmosphere with nice fragrant.

This is a series of flower photos. They are perennials, and are a common sight here in the tropics.

I took these photos using the macro function on my phone camera.

Almost Perfect

I was at the right time, at the right place. Most importantly, I had my camera with me. Hence, I was able to capture this reflection of a passing train. This would have been a perfect shot if the weather were brighter and the canal cleaner.

Unfortunately, the weather has been rainy recently, and it hasn’t been as bright and sunny. The debris were probably from inland, carried down by the rain. Oh well, as they say, there is no such thing as perfect.

Afternoon Walk

I was planning to take a look at a park I hadn’t been before. Unfortunately, recent weather has been rainy and unpredictable. So, I had to put off the visit to another day when it is bright and sunny. Meanwhile, I had to stick to my usual walk route.

This was the weather yesterday - dull and grey. If it remained like that, it is not so bad. But, Singapore is a small island in the tropics, the weather can change in a couple of minutes - literally.

This is my regular walk route/path.
I can't remember what this is. Someone mentioned it's name to me once. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name now.
The head of a monitor lizard out of the water. There are quite a few of them in the canal.
Here's another one returning to the canal. It's in the center of the photo.
Exercise stations along the walk path.
A big majestic tree. It must have been quite old.
On the way back from the walk, I made a slight detour, through a park. There is a lot of building going on in this part of the park. Most of the park is closed off.

A pavilion in the park.

Exercise stations.
Another pavilion.

Frangipani Flower

The horticultural name for the frangipani is Plumeria – a genus of flowering plants found in tropical areas. Frangipani is the common name, but it also goes by other names according to the country it is found in.

They are easy to plant and are common around here. The flowers are white, yellow, or multi-coloured. The centre of the flower has a different colour to the rest of the flower. The flowers are very beautiful, and they have a nice fragrant which some described as ‘sophisticated, lush, and rich’. They are perennials. They bloom throughout the year.

Frangipani is an ingredient in products like fragranced soaps, candles, massage oils, and potpourris. Some people float the flowers in a bath, or a bowl of water to get the feel of a relaxing effect of a spa day.

There are many myths and legends associated with the frangipani flower – some are supernatural. Although there is no scientific proof, people who are superstitious will not plant frangipanis in their gardens.

Frangipani trees are not very tall.
