Unique Leaves

Leaves come in different shapes, sizes, textures and colours. There are leaves that has very little green, and some leaves are not green in colour. There are also leaves that are green on one side, and another colour on the other. Some leaves have a varied of colours.

Some plants have what are called modified leaves in order to adapt and survive. They may change either the structure of the leaves, the color (to attract insects), or may add spines or thorns to protect itself.

The following are some unique and beautiful leaves. Some are more common than others.

By the way, leaves, collectively, are referred to as foliage – in case you don’t know.

Daily Walk

Here in the tropics most days are cloudy.

The clouds seem so low

This is State land where the railway tracks used to be. On the other side are workshops, factories and a temple. I believe the coconut palms and the banana trees are planted by them.

Some weed flowers. If you look closely, you will see some butterflies too.

I don't know what flowers are these.

Curious Tree

Does anyone know what this tree is?

I saw this in the Gardens by the Bay. Curious to know what this tree is, I looked high and low for a sign naming the tree, and perhaps a little information about the tree. But I couldn’t find any indication at all. Do tell me, if you have any information on the tree.

This is the fruit, and there were quite a few too. Must be the season.

A Light Snack

Spring rolls are savoury rolls with cabbage and other vegetable fillings inside a thinly wrapped cylindrical pastry. The kind of wrapper, fillings, and cooking technique used, as well as the name, vary considerably, depending on the region's culture. One country’s spring roll is different from the next.

However, it is believed that spring rolls originated from China, and they were usually eaten during the Spring Festival. Hence the name, which is a literal translation of the Chinese chūn juǎn (春卷 'spring roll'). They were a seasonal food consumed during the spring, and started as a pancake filled with the new season's spring vegetables, a welcome change from the preserved foods of the long winter months.

You can make your own Spring rolls with the ingredients you like. The wrappers are easily available in the supermarkets.

There are fried spring rolls and non-fried spring rolls. These are non-fried. They are typically made by filling the wrapping with pre-cooked ingredients.

I opted for a ABC juice. It was advertised as a Speciality and a Must try. So, what is ABC juice? It is Apple, Beetroot and Carrot juice blended together.

Palm Trees

Palm trees are a type of evergreen plant belonging to the Arecaceae family of plants. They are synonymous with tropical beaches, warm sunny climates, and beautiful landscaped gardens. However, some species of palms are tolerant of temperate climates and cold temperatures. There are also varieties of palm trees that can be grown indoors as houseplants.

Palm trees are grown for their ornamental appearance as well as for palm-derived products. There are over 2,600 species of palm trees, and they are grouped into over 200 genera. Roughly, palm trees can be divided into small, dwarf, and tall palm tree varieties.

Palm trees are recognized by their fan-shaped or feather-like fronds (leaves) and fiber-covered trunks or stems. Generally, leaves of palm trees are either pinnate (feather-like leaves) or palmate (fan-like fronds). Trunks are slender, some are short and fat, some have a ringed or bumpy appearance and some are covered in fiber or husks that make the trunk look hairy or spiky.

Here in Singapore, palm trees are a common sight.

Some reports indicate that the Christmas palm tree (scientific name Adonidia Merrillii) is one of the most popular ornamental types of palm. Large pinnate palm leaves arch up from the top of the stem to form a beautiful crown of green foliage.
