Flowers

A beautiful day must have flowers. Here are some commonly seen flowers in the tropics. They are all perennials. Clitoria ternatea or commonly known as the butterfly pea
Bougainvillea. Beautiful, rich and sweet colours of the papery bracts.
Cheilocostus speciosus, or crepe ginger.
Lovely yellow bells.
Impatiens Balsamina or commonly know as the garden balsam.
Jasmine flowers. There are many varieties. Some are more fragrant than others. This particular variety is not very fragrant.
Spider lilies. As the name implied, the flowers resemble spider webs.
These I do know the name of. The flowers are small and insignificant. But they have a white bract that stood out quite prominently. I guess this is how they attract the insects.
I don't know about these either. They are climbing vine plants. When in bloom, the orangey to red flowers (I am sure they are bracts, rather than flowers) cover the whole plant and the structure they were climbing on. Very beautiful indeed.

Stir-fried French Beans With Carrots And Prawns

Some posts ago, I did stir-fried French beans with garlic and dried prawns. For this dish, I added carrots, and instead of dried prawns, I used prawns.

Here we go, stir-fried French beans with carrots and prawns - Vincent’s style.

Remove the bits and pieces on both ends. I was taught to do this from young.

Cut the beans into smaller pieces, and rinse them.
Cut the carrot into slices too. I used only half the carrot in the picture, since it is not the main dish. Carrots add flavour and colour to the dish. Prepare some garlic. Rinse the prawns and we are ready to start cooking.
Heat up the wok. Add some oil. Add in the garlic… followed by the French beans, and the carrots. Stir-fry them for a couple of minutes. Add salt to taste. Add a bit of water. Add the prawns when you feel the beans are about ready.
When you are happy with the bite of the beans, the dish is done.
That is the general process of a stir-fried French beans dish.

Prepare the dish once, fine tune it a second time and by the third time, you will have your desired plate of stir-fried French beans.

Batoko Plum Tree

For a long time, I have wondered what these fruits are. They look a lot like maraschino cherries. Someone told me they are edible. So, out of curiosity, I tried one. They might be edible, but it is too sour and acidic to eat them fresh. That will explain why the birds and insects leave them alone.

Anyway, I came across the name of the plant in one of the pages from the National Parks site while looking for something else.

They are called Flacourtia inermis, or known commonly as lovi-lovi, or Batoko Plum. In some places, they are known as lobi-lobi. According to information from the site, they are rich in Vitamin C and Antioxidants. They are too acidic to be eaten fresh but they are made into Chutneys, jams and wines.

There are numerous of these trees on my walk route. When they ripens, I think I will bring along a bucket and collect them to make chutneys and jams. On second thought, better to forget the idea of chutneys and jams. It is a criminal offence here to pluck fruits grown by the National Parks.

Reflections

It was a lovely day for a walk. The air was a bit still and as usual, rather humid. But that is quite a typical day here in the tropics. Still, there is the occasional breeze to give a respite from the heat.

I saw these reflections in the water and thought they make rather nice pictures.

Wednesday Walk

Time passes so quickly these days. I seem to be in a dazed living one day to the next. I was still thinking it was Tuesday today, but something told me I was wrong. So, I checked and true enough, it is Wednesday today.

Here are some pictures for my Wednesday Walk post.

Saw this tree lizard enjoying the sun, oblivious to my presence.
Lovely pothos...
… creeping up a stone slope
Two young Arborvitae or Thuja plants. They don’t seem to grow too quickly.
Next to the Arborvitaes is – according to Google Image, a Naija palm. It is the one and only on my walk route. This is the first time I had a look, up-close.
The under side of the branches are covered with thorn-like bristles, or should it be bristle-like thorns.
The same goes for the stems.
Another nice day, another nice walk.
