Coffee

More good news for coffee drinkers - especially the guys.

Coffee cuts prostate cancer risk: Study

More is better when it comes to drinking coffee, to ward off the risk of deadly prostate cancer, according to a major United States study.

Men who drank six or more cups of the beverage per day had a 60 per cent lower risk of developing the most lethal type of prostate cancer and a 20 per cent lower risk of forming any type of prostate cancer, compared to men who did not drink coffee, it said.

Even just one to three cups per day was linked to a 30 per cent lower risk of developing lethal prostate cancer, according to the research carried out at the Harvard School of Public Health.

“Our study is the largest to date to examine whether coffee can lower the risk of lethal prostate cancer,” said Harvard associate professor and the study’s senior author Lorelei Nucci.

The effects were the same whether the coffee was caffeinated or decaffeinated, leading researchers to believe that the lower risk could be lined to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of coffee.

Prostate cancer is the third-most common cancer affecting men in Singapore. About 2,500 cases are diagnosed each year. A blood test can detect it early, and the caner can be graded on a Gleason score; the higher it is, the more likely the cancer is to spread.

Risk factors are typically lined to high-fat diets, heredity, alcohol and exposure to chemicals.

The study examined 47,911 US men who reported how much coffee they drank every four years from 1986 to 2008.

The lower risk seen in coffee drinkers remained even after researchers allowed for other factors that typically boost risk and were more often seen in coffee drinkers, such as smoking and failure to exercise.

Family Problems

Two men were sitting in a bar and discussing about their family problems.

One man said to the other: "Where I come from, we can't marry the one whom we love. You know my parents are forcing me to get married to this so called homely and domesticated girl from a village whom I haven't even met once. We call this an arranged marriage. I don't want to marry a woman whom I don't love. I told my parents that openly and now have a hell of a lot of family problems."

The other man said: "Talking about love marriages, where I come from we can marry the one we love. Let me tell you my story. I married a widow whom I deeply loved and dated her for three years. After a couple of years, my father fell in love with my step-daughter and married her, so my father became my son-in-law and I became my father's father-in-law. Legally now my daughter is my mother and my wife is my grandmother. More problems occurred when I had a son. My son is my father's brother and so he is my uncle. The situation turned worse when my father had a son. Now my father's son, my brother, is my grandson. Ultimately, I have become my own grandfather and I am my own grandson. And you say you have family problems?"

Osho

Osho was an Indian mystic and spiritual teacher. He was, in his own words, “a mystic who is trying to convey the mysteries that have become available to me.”
The following quotes are from him.

Even if nobody passes by the side of the rose, the fragrance will still be spreading around, moving .... somewhere, somebody may get it. And even if nobody gets it, it doesn't matter; it is simply natural for the flower to explode into fragrance.

Accept yourself. Respect yourself. Allow your nature to take its own course. Don't force, don't repress.

Doubt -- because doubt is not a sin, it is the sign of your intelligence. Doubt and go on enquiring until you find. Whosoever enquires, finds. It is absolutely certain; it has never been otherwise. Nobody has come empty-handed from an authentic enquiry.

I am all in favour of the sceptical mind. Do not believe anything unless you have experienced it. Do not believe anything - go on questioning, however long it takes.

You will have to create the path by walking yourself; the path is not ready-made, lying there and waiting for you. It is just like the sky: the birds fly, but they don't leave any footprints. You cannot follow them; there are no footprints left behind.

Buddha is not to be worshipped, one has to become a Buddha. Except for that, there is no worship, no prayer. You don't need any priest, you don't need any scriptures, you don't need to be in any religious organization, you have to be just yourself - silently, peacefully settling within your home.

I am not going to give you a destination. I can only give you a direction - awake, throbbing with life, unknown, always surprising, unpredictable. I'm not going to give you a map. I can give you only a great passion to discover. Yes, a map is not needed; great passion, great desire to discover is needed. Then you go on your own. Move into the vast, into the infinite, and by and by, learn to trust it. Leave yourself in the hands of life.

I am saying something about the ineffable. I am saying something about the ultimate mystery. You can understand it, yet you can never understand it totally. It is elusive, it escapes. It is within reach, but it is not within grasp. You are always coming closer and closer to it, but you never arrive. And the day you arrive, then you are no more there; the distinction between the seeker and the sought disappears. Then you are it.

I don't want anybody to stand between the individual and existence. No prayer, no priest -- you alone are enough to face the sunrise. You don't need somebody to interpret for you what a beautiful sunrise it is.

All that you need is just to be silent and listen to existence. There is no need of any religion, there is no need of any God, there is no need of any priesthood, there is no need of any organization. All those things can be removed. Now all that is left to you is a state of meditation which simply means a state of utter silence. Even the word meditation makes it look heavier. It is better to just call it a simple, innocent silence.

You should be conscious and alert, and respond to every situation with absolute consciousness. Then whatever you do is right. It is not a question of actions being right or wrong, it is a question of consciousness - whether you are doing it consciously or unconsciously like a robot.

I am simply an individual, the way existence created me. I have kept myself absolutely uninfluenced by any idiotic ideology - religious, political, social, financial. And the miracle is that because I am not burdened with all these glasses on my eyes, and curtains before me, I can see clearly.

Once you start feeling responsible for your own life you start growing, because then there is no point in wasting time in postponing, in waiting. Nobody is coming to help you. All waiting is futile, all waiting is sheer wastage.

To me spirituality has a totally different connotation. It needs an honest individuality. It does not allow any kind of dependence. It creates a freedom for itself, whatever the cost. It is never in the crowd but alone, because the crowd has never found any truth. The truth has been found only in people's aloneness.

I believe in this meaningless, beautiful chaos of existence, and I am ready to go with it wherever it leads. I don't have a goal, because existence has no goal. It simply is, flowering, blossoming, dancing - but don't ask why. Just an overflow of energy, for no reason at all. I am with existence.

Nose-blowing Could Raise Risk Of Stroke

Stroke, sex and blowing your nose could raise the risk of a type of stroke, said researchers in the Netherlands.

The study on 250 stroke patients identified eight risk factors linked to bleeding the brain, BBC News reported. They included drinking a cup of coffee, which carried the highest risk, exercising, having sex, nose-blowing, straining to defecate, drinking cola and being startled or angry.

They all increased blood pressure, which could result in blood vessels bursting, said the research published in the journal Stroke. The study was led by Dr Monique Vlak, a neurologist.

Stroke is the fourth-most common cause of death, as well as the greatest cause of disability.

Bleeding can happen when a weakened blood vessel, known as a brain aneurysm, bursts.

Researchers found that coffee was responsible for more than one in 10 burst brain aneurysms in the patients they studied.

The Stroke Association said more research was needed to see if the triggers caused the ruptures, BBC News reported.

Happiness

To attain happiness in another world we need only to believe something; to secure it in this world, we must do something. - Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Some of us might find happiness if we quit struggling so desperately for it. - William Feather

There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. - Henry Ford

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

The key to happiness is not that you never get upset, frustrated or irritated. It is how quickly you decide to snap out of it.

Happiness, like an old friend, is inclined to drop in unexpectedly – when you are working hard on something else.

All of us attain the greatest success and happiness possible in this life whenever we use our native capacities to their fullest extent.

If we want to remain happy in spite of the ups and downs of life we have to be real people, honest with and fair to ourselves.

Work, either with the hands or the head. The moment you have something to do, the draughts are open and the chimney draws and you are happy.

The happiest of people do not necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

Half the unhappiness in the world is due to the failure of plans which were never reasonable, and often impossible.

If you want to be cheerful and happy, act that way and you will soon find yourself becoming that way.

The best way to secure future happiness is to be as happy as is rightfully possible today.

Food For Thought

The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors; that which it loves, and also that which it fears; it reaches the height of its cherished aspirations; it falls to the level of its unchastened desires. Every thought-seed sown or allowed to fall into the mind, and to take root there, produces its own, blossoming sooner or later into act, and bearing its own furtive of opportunity and circumstance. Good thoughts bear good fruit; bad thought, bad fruit. - James Allen

Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost, because men are not prepared to receive them: for such seeds as these cannot spring up anywhere except in the good soil of freedom, spontaneity and love. - Thomas Merton

It's a matter of seeing the original meaning of all things. The world is full of all kinds of meanings. But our minds are so fettered by the lies and falsehoods they make for themselves, that they cannot see the beauty, goodness, or truth of those meanings. Only a mind that has become free can see such things, and that seeing is also a making. Because what exists, if no one can see it, might just as well not exist at all, but if seeing comes, non-being is turned into utter being. - Yi Mun-yol
