Handicapped but not disabled
This is from my friend, Janet
This is a remarkable story about tenacity!
The lady, in her 30's, was a dancer who had trained since she was a little girl. Later in life, she lost her entire left arm in an accident and fell into a state of depression for a few years. Someone then asked her to coach a children's dancing group. From that point on, she realized that she could not forget dancing. She still loved to dance and wanted to dance again. So, she started to do some of her old routines, but, having lost her arm, she had also lost her balance. It took a while before she could even make simple turns and spins without falling.
Then she heard of a man in his 20s who had lost a leg in an accident. He had also fallen into the usual denial, depression and angry type of emotional roller coaster. She was determined to find him (apparently he was from a different Province) and persuaded him to dance with her. He had never danced, and to 'dance with one leg... are you joking with me? No way!' But, she didn't give up, and he reluctantly agreed thinking, 'I have nothing else to do anyway.'
She started to teach him dancing 101. The two broke up a few times because he had no concept of using muscles, of how to control his body, and knew none of the basic things about dancing. When she became frustrated and lost patience with him, he would walk out. Eventually, they came back together and started training seriously. They hired a choreographer to design routines for them. She would fly high (held by him) with both arms (a sleeve for an arm) flying in the air. He could bend horizontally supported by one leg with her leaning on him, etc. In the competition, as you will see, they dance beautifully and they legitimately won the competition. It's ingenious how they incorporate the crutch into the routine!
This is a most magnificent and touching performance. It is living proof that the strong human spirit can conquer tremendous physical limitations!

4 Things You Probably Never Knew Your Mobile Phone Could Do
This was circulating on the net.
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:
One: Emergency Number
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
Two: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.
Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).
Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a mobile phone!'
Three: Hidden Battery Power Three: Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.
Four: How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone!: * # 06 #, a 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.
You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

Too hot to handle
The claim: A spicy meal before bed can disrupt sleep.
The facts: an old wives’ tale has it that a little kick to the palate before bed can lead to fitful sleep, if not nightmares.
Well, the advice is a good one.
Research over the years has shown that a spicy meal at night can lead to poor sleep. The most direct study to show this was published in the International Journal of Psychophsiology by a team of Australian researchers. The scientists recruited a group of young, healthy men and had them consume meals that contained Tabasco sauce and mustard shortly before they turned in on some evenings and non-spicy control meals on other evenings.
On the nights that included spicy meals there were marked changes in the subjects sleep patterns. They spent less time n both the light phase of sleep known as Stage 2 and the deep, slow-wave Stages 3 and 4 sleep. All of which meant that the subjects experienced less sleep overall and took longer to drift off.
In accounting for the effect, an obvious possibility is indigestion. The scientist also noted that after eating the spicy meals, the subjects’ body temperatures rose during their first sleep cycles, which has been linked in other studies to poorer sleep quality.
The bottom line: A spicy meal before bed can impair sleep .

You Are Special
A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?”
Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.” He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up.
He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air.
“Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty.
“Now who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.
“My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was worth $20. Many times in our live, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special! Don’t ever forget it!”

Joggers Live Longer
New York: Running on a regular basis can slow the effects of aging, according to a 21-year study.
Elderly runners lead longer, healthier lives than their non-jogging peers, say researchers from Stanford University who followed 538 members of a US running club and 423 healthy non-runners, starting in 1984.
They found that runners aged 50 and older had less heart disease and staved off physical disability an average of 16 years longer.
The study, published in the latest Archives of Internal Medicine, adds to previous research that has shown a link between exercise and improved health.
Physical activity that makes the heart and lungs work harder may be even more crucial to well-being and longevity, researchers said.
“We’ve all come to know that exercise is good for you and the bottom line is it’s even better than we thought,” emeritus professor James Fries, 69, at the Stanford School of Medicine, the study’s lead author and himself a runner, said yesterday. If you have to pick a key thing that makes people healthier as they age, it’s aerobic exercise.”

Big Rocks
One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of students and, to drive home a point, used a illustration those students will never forget.
As he stood in front of the group of high powered overachievers he said, “Okay, time for a quiz.”
He pulled out a one-gallon, wide mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, “Is this jar full?”
Everyone in the class said, “Yes.”
“Really?” He asked. Then he reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks.
“Is the jar full?” He asked once more.
By this time the class was on to him. “Probably not,” One of them answered.
“Good!” he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, “Is this jar full?”
“No!” the class shouted.
Once again he said. “Good!” Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, “What is the point of this illustration?”
One eager beaver raised his hand and said, “The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!”
“No,” the speaker replied, “that’s not the point at all. The truth this illustration teaches us is: if you don’t put the big rocks in first, you will never get them in at all.”
What are the ‘big rocks’ in your life? Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you’ll never get them in at all. If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, the sand) then you’ll fill your life with little things you worry about that don’t really matter, and you’ll never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big important stuff (the big rocks).

How smart is Your Right Foot?
A friend forwarded this to me.
This is from an orthopedic surgeon............ Try it. It will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain!
1. While sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.
I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

Give The World Your Best
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered - Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you with selfish ulterior motives. - Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you may win some false friends and true enemies. - Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people will likely cheat you. - Be honest and frank anyway
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight. - Build anyway
If you find serenity and happiness, they may become jealous. - Be happy anyway
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. - Give the world the best you got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it was always between you and your Maker. It was never between you and them, ANYWAY!

Risk of food poisoning from mayonnaise?
The claim: Mayonnaise can increase the risk of food poisoning
The facts: one popular picnic ingredient that always attracts suspicion is mayonnaise.
But studies cast doubt on that.
Most commercial brands of mayonnaise contain vinegar and other ingredients that make them acidic- and therefore very likely to protect against spoilage. When problems occur, they usually result from other contaminated or low-acid ingredients (like chicken and seafood), improper storage and handling, or homemade versions that contain unpasteurised eggs.
One prominent study published in The journal of Food Protection found, for example, that in the presence of commercial mayonnaise, the growth of salmonella and staphylococcus bacteria in contaminated chicken and ham salad either slowed or stopped altogether.
As the amount of mayonnaise increased, the rate of growth decreased. When temperatures rose to those of a hot summer day, the growth increased, but not as much as in samples that did not contain mayonnaise.
For backyard chefs, some high-risk foods are raw shellfish, bulk ground beef (health officials say a single hamburger can contain meat from hundreds of animals) and unwashed fruit and vegetables.
The bottom line: Despite its reputation, mayonnaise can reduce food spoilage.

Carrot, Egg, Or Coffee Bean?
A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that after solving one problem, another one would arise.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the second he placed eggs, and the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word. The daughter sucked her teeth and waited impatiently, wondering what he was doing.
In about twenty minutes time he turned off the burners. He fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. He scooped the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then he ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to his daughter he asked. “Darling, what do you see?”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots.
She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.
She humbly asked. “What does it mean father?”
He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity, boiling water, but each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. But after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.
The ground coffee beans were unique however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
“Which are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

Stroke
A friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously... Please read:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and that she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ.
Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.
Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally! He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, S.T. R. . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE .
(If the smile is lopsided, a stroke is likely to have occurred.)
T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (If the speech is slurred, a stroke is likely to have occurred.) (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
(If he or she cannot raise one arm, a stroke is likely to have occurred.)
*NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue! If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call the ambulance immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Five warning symptoms of Stroke.
1. Sudden weakness or numbness of the arms, legs, or face, especially on one side.
2. Sudden vision problem in one or both eyes.
3. Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, or difficulty in walking.
4. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking.
5. Sudden sever headache with no know cause.
Recognising stroke warning symptoms promptly and seeking immediate emergency care can mean the difference between life and death or disability.
Patients whose stroke is caused by an interruption of blood supply to the brain (blood clot) can be treated with clot-busting drugs, but such medicines should be given within three hours of symptom onset.
Other types of strokes may require immediate surgery to prevent serious disability or death.
P.S.
Please feel free to copy this, and the other post, and pass it on to your friends whom you think might appreciate it.
Knowledge
A man was out walking in the desert when a voice said to him, "Pick up some pebbles and put them in your pocket, and tomorrow you will be both happy and sad."
The man obeyed. He stooped down and picked up a handful of pebbles and put them in his pocket.
The next morning he reached into his pocket and found diamonds and rubies and emeralds. And he was both happy and sad. Happy he had taken some - sad that he hadn't taken more. And so it is with knowledge.
Another of my artwork. Acrylic on paper. Trying an 'effect' kind of artwork. It didn't turn out quite as good as I would have like it to. Can you see a guy sitting on a chair, his head in his hands?
