Communicaton Skills

A lot of trouble in the world today is due to miscommunication, or misunderstanding in a communication. Poor communication has been the cause of many quarrels, bad feelings and ruined friendships and relationships. Hence, it is important that we communicate well.

Communication is a big part of our lives. Through communication, we learn, and impart knowledge; We share information, and we keep abreast of what’s going on around us. We communicate our thoughts, ideas, and feelings with friends, loved ones and people we interact with everyday. We are communicating every second, every moment. We communicate so frequently that we take communication for granted. But, communication is actually a complex process.

Communication, simply defined, is the process of exchanging information between two parties. This can be in the form of conversation, letters, emails, memos, messages, etc... When the message or information is received and understood, then the communication is successful. If the message is not received by the other party for whatever reason, then the communication has failed. If the message is received but misunderstood, then, there is a miscommunication.

Good communication means saying just enough – don’t say too little or talk too much. Try to convey your message in as few words as possible. Say what you mean clearly and directly, whether you’re speaking to someone in person, on the phone, or via email. If you ramble on, your listener will either tune you out, or he may be unsure what you want. Think about what you want to say before you say it; this will help you to avoid talking excessively and confusing your audience.

To communicate effectively, we must understand that we are all different. You cannot use the same words and same tone of voice to communicate to all and sundry. We perceive and interpret words, and actions differently due to our education, background and also intellect. Use words that are understood. Depending on who you are talking to, your tone of voice can be serious, jovial, or casual. Watch your tone of voice. You have to know your audience, or whoever you are communicating with.

When communicating, as a listener, we should listen carefully to what people are saying and what they are trying to say. As a talker, we must be certain that people understand what we are saying. Any doubts, at any point of the communication must be clarified, so that there is no misunderstanding. We must also understand, or try to see the other person’s point of view. And even if we do not agree with them it is important that we keep an open mind, and respect their point of view.

Our ability to communicate well is an important tool in our pursuit of our goals. We must practice our communication skills so that when important occasions arise, we will be ready to communicate our ideas clearly. If you are able to communicate skilfully, you can work miracles.

Finally, it’s important to be nice and polite in all your communications.

Learn to communicate, and communicate well.
