Jack's Place Restaurant

The ‘Motley Crew’ met for lunch on the 5th of October to celebrate the birthday of someone in the group. It was an early celebration due to some in the group having busy schedules, and some who will be travelling. There were seven of us available for lunch. The birthday boy picked ‘Jack’s Place’, and the rest chipped in to buy him a meal instead of presents. That is the arrangement with this group.

Jack’s Place has 13 outlets island wide. We went to the one in the North-East region of Singapore. I have dined at Jack’s Place a couple of times in the past, but not at this particular restaurant, at earlier branches elsewhere. I was keen to see what has changed over the years.

A little history of how Jack’s Place started. An immigrant from Hainan, Mr Say Lip Hai arrived in Singapore in the mid 1900s. He worked as a chef with British troops and soon perfected his Western culinary skills. A British housewife who liked his cooking suggested that he start a catering business at her husband, Jack Hunt’s pub on Killinery Road. Mr Say took up on the suggestion, and thus in 1966, Jack’s place opened for business.

Shortly after, Mr Hunt returned to Britain. Mr Say took over the business, refined the menu, and expanded Jack’s Place throughout Singapore. Jack’s Place quickly became Singapore’s trusted favourite casual dining steakhouse for family and friends. Diners enjoy great value sizzling steaks, set meals, delicious cakes, and delectable western food in a cheerful and cosy environment.

I would say the food was still pretty decent for this kind of mid-range restaurant. This was what I had – the Mixed grill. I enjoyed that.
These were what the others had.
For dessert, we had a birthday cake – not from the restaurant. We brought our own cake. The restaurant played the ‘Birthday song’ when we were lighting the candles on the cake. It was a nice touch, totally unexpected. The burned cheesecake didn’t look like much, ‘wrapped’ in ‘newspapers’. But it was actually very nice.
Overall, we had a pleasant, leisurely lunch. The company was exceptional. The food was all right, and service was not bad in this labour shortage industry. Jack’s Place has done well through the years, with their low-keyed décor, mid-range price and decent food. In the F&B business where competition is fierce, they have managed to hold their own. The restaurant was running at full capacity when we were there.

The decked up Birthday boy.
