Random Snaps

Some pictures taken when I was out on my walks.

Peculiar trees. Their branches, instead of growing outwards and upwards, they grow downwards

There were once called ‘wild bananas’ and ‘fake birds of paradise’. Now, they are called Heliconias.

Here comes the setting sun.

Humor

I just bought my husband a ‘Get better soon’ card. He’s not sick… I just think he could be better. - Unknown

On Life

We are all just a car crash, a diagnosis, an unexpected phone call, a newfound love, or a broken heart away from becoming a completely different person. How beautifully fragile are we that so many things can take but a moment to alter who we are forever? - Samuel Decker Thompson

Life is like the harp string. If it is strung too tight, it won't play. If it is too loose, it hands. The tension that produces the beautiful sound lies in the middle. - The Buddha

Life itself has no meaning. Life is an opportunity to create a meaning. - Unknown

Life is not about being better than someone else. It is about allowing yourself to grow to your fullest potential. - Unknown

In life, it's not where you go - it's who goes with you. - Unknown

Sometimes, you have to let go of the picture of what you thought life would be like and learn to find joy in the story your’re living. - Unknown

Costus Curvibracteatus aka Orange Tulip Ginger

Costus is a group of perennial herbaceous plants in the family Costaceae. It is widespread through tropical and subtropical regions.

Costus Curvibracteatus is a tropical rhizomatous perennial, a member of the spiral ginger family of plants. They are very common here - cultivated as a decorative landscape and garden plant. Its common name is Orange Tulip Ginger. It is also sometimes referred to as spiral ginger.

“An evergreen perennial, the large leaves of Costus Curvibracteatus can be effective ground cover, ranging in size from 15 to 35 centimetres long and 5 to 10 cm wide. They are glossy and glabrous above, but hirsute on the edges and underside, and alternately arranged on a spiralling stem, which has a diameter about 1.5 to 2.5 cm.” - Wikipedia

During flowering, small, hermaphroditic yellow or orange tubular florets emerge among the bracts. They don’t bloom at the same time. I have never seen an inflorescence with all florets booming.

Glossy, overlapping bracts form a terminal inflorescence, that is spike-shaped to ovoid. The bracts are red to orange, usually becoming more orange at the apex, which curves outward.

Be An Encourager

Everyone needs a little encouragement and motivation from time to time. A few encouraging or motivational words from you could make the difference between another’s success or failure. They could mean everything to someone who is struggling, or going through a bad patch. So, when possible, where possible, be an encourager. People will thank you and remember you for it.

It is better to lose your Ego to the one you Love, than to lose the one you LOVE because of Ego. - John Keats

The manner in which one endures what must be endured is more important than the thing that must be endured. - Dean Acheson

He is the best physician who is the most ingenious inspirer of hope. - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

If you give one hundred percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end. - Unknown

South Beach

                                                                   JW Marriott

I have walked pass the JW Marriott many times, but didn’t get a chance to have a closer look at the place. A couple of weeks ago, I was out for dinner with a friend in the area. After dinner, we thought we would have a wonder around and have a closer look at the place.

It was then that I found out that South Beach Singapore, previously known as Beach Road Military Camp where the first National Service enlistment took place, it is now the combination of both old (4 heritage buildings) and new (2 towers) architectures.

Consisting of the South Beach Tower, South Beach Residences and JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach in the same compound, the 32,000 square feet South Beach Avenue is the lifestyle wing for dining, wining, nightlife and beauty concepts.

It is home to 16 dining and lifestyle concepts, including more than 10 restaurants, cafes and drinking places. Quite a posh place in downtown Singapore. Unfortunately, we were in the early stages of the easing of the lockdown, so the place was very quiet. Most of the shops and restaurants were closed.

A sculpture by Richard MacDonald in the atrium area.

This is the sculpture in better lighting.

Came across these attractive flowers in the vicinity. We didn't stop to smell them, but we did stop to take a couple of shots.

Fake Maraschino Cherries

There are quite a few of these trees along my walk route. The fruits appear a few times a year.  They look like maraschino cherries, but they are not – maybe distant cousins.

One day, I was looking at one of the trees when someone walking along mentioned in passing that they are edible. Out of curiosity, I gave them a try. They are edible in that they are not poisonous. But they are too sour to be really edible.

They look like maraschino cherries without the stalk.

I guess that is why even the birds and insects leave them alone to ripen.
