Odds And Ends

Photos of odds and ends of my recent Promenade walk.

The immediate area outside of the stadium. Little water fountains where the little ones play, while the parents keep an eye on them in the shade.

These apartments are just across the river from the Stadium. Prime property estates.
A dog park. Time for the dogs to play.
A 'pebble' for a seat.
A lookout tower in the vicinity of the National Stadium.
I love this series of photos of dark clouds trying to block out the sun.
There was a lot of movement up in the sky.
It was dusk. And somewhere in the distance, there was rain.
The domes of the Gardens by the Bay and the iconic Marina Bay Sands integrated resort at the back.
The Singapore Flyer.
The black dots in the sky are kites.

Democracy

Democracy is a double edged sword. It cuts both ways. So, democracy does not always work.

People will abuse the system, surely. Given the nature of human beings, they will tweak the system to suit them. Not all people are honest. Not all people will play their part and take only their share. Most people will take more than their share.

I once read that the country that will be successful and go far is the one who has a visionary leader who has the welfare of his people at heart, and citizens who believe in their leader, and are willing to follow the leader without question. That would be the real deal.

A visionary leader without followers will not accomplish anything. Followers without a good leader are like the blind being led by the blind. It will not work out well.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find visionary leaders or followers who are willing to do as they are told. Presently, all leaders are treated with suspicion, and all followers think that they know better than the leaders. It’s democratic society, you see.

Where did it all go wrong? Aren’t leaders supposed to lead and followers supposed to follow?

I am not trying to open a can of worms. Just a philosphical moment, I guess. Anyway, let’s move on...

Sculptures

There are sculptures, and there are sculptures. Some sculptures are easy to understand while others are more abstract, and are open to personal interpretation. Still, every piece of sculpture is a work of art, and means something to the sculptor. It is the artist’s medium to represent something.

A piece of sculpture is as much about the artist as what it represents. The idea, the emotions, and creativity that go into a sculpture might be totally lost on us, but to the artist and those who know how to appreciate it, the sculpture represents something and means something to them.

Creativity is a very personal thing. Sometimes, we might not agree with the depiction, but we can understand what the sculptor is trying to say – just like when we disagree with someone’s opinion, but we understand his or her line of thoughts.

Sometimes, knowing the artist personally, can help shed light on what he or she is trying to say or do.

When I look at a sculpture, I like to know what it represents, what it means. Personally, a good piece of sculpture depicts the artist’s story behind the sculpture. So, the first thing I do when I see a sculpture is to look for information on the sculpture.

This sculpture - The Force of Nature, is by Lorenzo Quinn of Spain. Aluminium and Stainless Steel are the materials. This is what the sign says :-

“We (humans) think of ourselves as the supreme beings, above all others and in absolute control of our destiny and surroundings. We live in a false sense of security only to be awakened by Mother Nature’s fury almost to remind us of her presence and our responsibility towards her child the Earth.”

I think the idea, or meaning behind the sculpture is excellent. What do you think of the sculpture and its depiction?

Clouds

I love cloud formations. They are ever changing, as they go about their way in the sky. Here in the tropics, they put on a performance every day. Never a dull moment watching them.

Stadium Surrounding

“The Singapore Sports Hub, which cost S$1.33 billion to build, commenced operations on 30 June 2014. The 35-hectare site houses the new 55,000-seat National Stadium, a 6,000-capacity indoor aquatics centre, the Singapore Indoor Stadium, a sports museum, retail spaces and a library, among other facilities.” - Singapore Infopedia

I have been to the Singapore Sports Hub twice. However, I have never been in the Stadium, or any of the facilities. Somehow there was no inclination to do so. I am not very sports inclined. Anyway, on both occasions, there weren’t any events on.

The first time I went there, it was on a friend’s suggestion to go and have a look at the place since we have never been there. We had a walk around the stadium and the immediate area, which was very nice. After that we had a wander in the complex and then had something to eat in one of the eateries. We were there for a half a day and it was very nice.

Last weekend, I went to the stadium again because some friends and I were starting our walk along the promenade from the stadium. I went a bit early and snapped some pictures.

As with waterfront apartments anywhere in the world, these apartments cost a fortune.
A nice outdoor place for a drink or a meal.
