Fuchsia Plants

Fuchsia is a genus of flowering plants that consists mostly of shrubs or small trees. There are over 100 species of Fuchsia. The vast majority of garden hybrids have descended from a few parent species.

Fuchsia thrive well in cool temperatures and moist air, and are adaptable to all kinds of soil as long as the soil drains well. Filtered light is preferred, but not heat.

You can plant fuchsia in hanging baskets. Their tear drop flower head, and pendant-shaped flowers – beautiful and delicate, resemble ear-rings, bloom in profusion throughout summer and autumn. For the tropical species, it is possible to see them all year.

Fuchsia flowers have four sepals and four shorter, broader petals. The sepals are bright red and the petals purple depending on the species. They can vary from white to dark red, purple-blue, and orange. A few have yellowish tones. The bright colours attract the humming birds which pollinate them.
