This is a unique plant in that the inflorescence bears small flowers which are contained in close together spirals on the spadix. The spadix is elongated, and beneath it is the spathe, a type of bract which some mistook to be the flower. The leaves are dark green in colour, shiny and heart-shaped.
Anthurium can be grown as houseplants, or outdoors in shady spots. Apparently, anthuriums are poisonous due to calcium oxalate crystals. The sap is an irritant to the skin and eyes.
