Rainy Spell

We are having a rainy spell. We had four days of continuous rain. On the fifth day, when I thought the sky had emptied all its water, it rained again after midday. For the first two days, it drizzled steadily throughout the day, resulting in flash floods in parts of the island. Luckily, the floods, though an inconvenience, didn’t cause too much damage, and subsided after twenty minutes or so.

For the third and fourth day, there were intermittent drizzles. The rain would stop for a few minutes, and then continue raining again. All that rain brought the mercury down a bit. At one point, the temperature went as low as 21.6C. That is cold for Singapore which is only 85 miles, or 137 kilometres from the equator.

The cause of the rain, apart from it being the North-east monsoon season, was attributed to it being an effect of la Nina.

Singapore is not too badly off, as compared to our immediate northern neighbour, where thousands had to be evacuated as flood hits. Elsewhere, countries are experiencing snow storms, and cold freezes. And, in California the big fire had claimed many lives. So, it hasn’t been a good start to the new year for some people.

Some photos of the rain from my apartment.

This is the sky today. Grey skies all over the island. It looks like more rain is on the way.
