The Other Side Of The Canal

My regular walk route, which is part of the island’s Park-connector, runs by the side of a canal. It is a very popular route for residents in the area – walkers, joggers, cyclists, skateboards… In view of that, the authorities decided to do up the other side of the canal too.

Last year, the authorities started work on the other side of the canal. For a while, the area was all fenced up. Work has been completed and the track is now open.

I had a look the other day to see what they have done.

They have tarred the path and planted plants on both sides of the path. There are seats for those who need a rest or simply to just sit and relax. All very neat.

This was just one section of the canal. There are still constructions and developments along the way. We wait to see if they will continue work along the canal, or if they will link the route with other developments in the area.

Dahlias

I took pictures of these beautiful Dahlias at a Dahlia display. According to information at the display there are around 40 Dahlia species, and thousands of different cultivars and hybrids.

They are divided into various groups according to their flower forms – ball, decorative, cactus, anemone, collerette, pompon, orchid and water-lily. The name of each flower form describes its appearance or shape.

Apart from ball dahlias, I am afraid I do not know how to differentiate the rest of the dahlias – neither their forms nor variants.

According to Wikipedia, dahlias belong to one of the biggest group of flowering plant families, Asteraceae, or the sunflower family.

Ball form dahlias are quite self-explanatory.

Pathways

It was a bright and sunny day, when I had to maneuver my way past some construction by the road. The sharp shadows on the path were too beautiful to be ignored. Luckily, it wasn’t too busy at the time, so I was able to get a good shot.

And since I was on the subject of pathways, I added a couple of shots from another pathway.

Jasmine Flower

The Jasmine plant is another commonly seen plants around here in the tropics. They are hardy and easy to grow. As long as there is sunlight and the soil is well-drained, they are happy. They can be grown in pots or directly in the ground. If you are creative, you can grow them as hedges, or wall-side borders, or you can prune them back as ground covers.

Jasmine flowers are perennial. They bloom all year round. The flowers are mostly white in colour – pure white, and very pretty. They contrast very well with the leaves which are glossy, and bright green.

Although they are known for their fragrant, not all species of Jasmine are fragrant. Some Jasmine flowers have no fragrant. The fragrant is most noticeable in the evening or early morning, when the temperature is lower, the air is fresher and still.

Jasmine are cultivated not just as an ornamental shrub. They are also cultivated for their perfumery uses like soap, lotions as well as essential oils. They are also grown for tea-making. Jasmine tea is a popular tea with a nice fragrant. The roots of jasmines are touted to have medicinal values.

Jasmines are, ironically, a genus of shrubs in the olive family.
