A peek into the world of animals. I think it is good that we learn something about the animals that share our wonder-ful world.
Here are some fun facts and trivia about animals, courtesy of Facebook pages ‘strangest Facts’, 'Wild Wonders', David Atenborough etc… However, I do not know if they are true. Some of them sound really incredible.
Some animals compete with strength. Porcupines compete with aim. But the part most people miss is how precise the moment has to be.
A female porcupine is only receptive for a window that can last less than a single day each year. Outside of that, she will aggressively reject any approach, often with teeth and quills ready.
So the male does not guess. He tests. From a distance of several feet, he sprays a targeted stream of urine toward her. It is not random. It is a chemical signal, carrying cues about his fitness and timing. If she is not ready, she reacts instantly and violently. If she is, she stays. Only then does he move closer.
Even after that, the risk does not disappear. The streaked tenrec is one of the strangest mammals on Earth – and it lives on the island of Madagascar, a place already famous for weird creatures.
The streaked tenrec has a specialized patch of 11‑16 quills on its lower back called a stridulating organ. By contracting a small muscle, it rubs these quills together to produce ultrasonic sounds – a method called stridulation. Crickets do this. Some snakes and spiders do this. But the streaked tenrec is the only mammal in the world that communicates this way. The clicks and chirps are used to warn family members of danger and to keep the group together in dense vegetation. Humans can't hear most of it – the sounds are ultrasonic, beyond our range.
When threatened, the tenrec doesn't just run. It raises its barbed, detachable quills and bucks violently, jumping up and down to embed the spines into a predator's face. The quills break off and remain in the attacker. And there's an even darker detail: females use these same spines to reject unwanted males. If a male gets too pushy during courtship, she erects her spines and – in one of the most brutal rejections in the animal kingdom – stabs him in the genitals.
Most animals that hibernate live in cold climates. The streaked tenrec lives in the tropics, where temperatures rarely drop below freezing. Yet it can enter torpor – a temporary, hibernation‑like state – for days or even weeks, slowing its metabolism to conserve energy when food is scarce or during cool weather.
