A peek into the world of animals. I think it is good that we learn something about the animals that share our wonder-ful world.

Here are some fun facts and trivia about animals, courtesy of Facebook pages ‘Strangest Facts’ ‘Wild Wonders’, David Attenborough, etc… However, I do not know if they are true. Some of them sound really incredible.

Tigers cannot purr like house cats. When they are happy, they do not make the same soft purring sound. Instead, tigers show their feeling by squinting or gently closing their eyes. You can tell a relaxed tiger when its face looks calm and its eyes are soft.

The reason tigers close their eyes to show comfort is tied to safety. Closing the eyes cuts down on what they can see, and that makes them more open to danger. Because of this, a tiger will only squint or shut its eyes when it feels very safe and not threatened. It is a quiet sign of trust.

The Red River Hog is one of Africa’s most eye-catching wild animals, easily recognized by its rich reddish coat, bold facial markings, and long white ear tufts.

Native to the rainforests and wetlands of Central and West Africa, these pigs are highly social and often move in small family groups. Despite their cute appearance, they are strong and adaptable foragers, feeding on roots, fruits, and small animals.

Takins are what happens when evolution plays mix‑and‑match. Part goat, part antelope, part ox, part moose — and entirely built to survive one of the harshest environments on Earth.

The takin (Budorcas taxicolor) lives in the eastern Himalayas, from 4,000 to 12,000 feet elevation, where winter temperatures plunge and fog and rain are constant. It has evolved two adaptations so strange they sound like science fiction.

First: no sweat glands. Instead, an instant "raincoat."
Unlike almost every other mammal, takins do not have traditional skin glands. Instead, their skin itself secretes an oily, bitter‑tasting substance that coats their fur from the inside out. This secretion acts as a waterproof barrier, repelling moisture from relentless Himalayan storms and fog. In zoos, streaks of this oil can be seen where takins rub against enclosure walls — a physical reminder that their raincoat is always on.

Second: internal nose heaters.
The takin's large, moose‑like snout houses oversized sinus cavities filled with blood vessels. Icy air, inhaled at sub‑zero temperatures, passes through these chambers and is warmed by body heat before it ever reaches the lungs. This prevents the loss of critical body heat from the simple act of breathing — a survival necessity for a mammal living above the snow line.

And why "biological chimera"?
The takin looks like someone assembled it from spare parts. Its short, powerful legs and split hooves belong on a mountain goat. The thick, golden coat would fit an ox. The quokka (Setonix brachyurus) has been called “the world’s happiest animal” because of its permanent smile. But survival on Rottnest Island and the south‑west Australian mainland is no fairy tale.

The sacrifice. When a predator like a dingo, fox, or python closes in, a mother quokka does something that shocks first‑time observers. She deliberately relaxes the powerful muscle that seals her pouch. The tiny, hairless joey drops to the ground, where it squirms and squeals. The baby’s frantic movements distract the predator for those critical seconds the mother needs to escape. It is a brutal calculation: the mother lives, and can breed again, while the joey becomes a sacrifice.

The backup plan. A female quokka can mate again within 24 hours of giving birth. The resulting embryo does not develop immediately. Instead, it enters a state of suspended animation called embryonic diapause — a biological insurance policy. If the current joey survives, the waiting embryo is reabsorbed. If the joey is killed or dropped to save the mother, the “backup” embryo instantly resumes growth and is born exactly 27 days later, ready to crawl into the pouch.

They climb trees and regurgitate food like cows.

Quokkas are macropods (the same family as kangaroos and wallabies), but they have a unique talent among their relatives: they can climb trees. They scramble up low branches to reach fresh leaves and to escape ground predators.

And they are foregut fermenters — just like cows. They consume fibrous leaves and stems, then regurgitate the partially digested cud, chew it again, and swallow it for a second round of digestion. This allows them to extract maximum nutrients from tough, low‑quality vegetation that other animals cannot process.

It lives its entire life without ever taking a sip. A desert animal that survives where water simply does not exist. But the real detail most people miss is how completely its body rewrites the rules of survival. Kangaroo rats do not find water. They manufacture it.

Inside their cells, the breakdown of dry seeds releases hydrogen that binds with oxygen, creating what scientists call metabolic water. Every bite becomes hydration at a microscopic level.

Their kidneys push this even further, producing urine so concentrated that almost no liquid is lost. What little moisture they risk losing through breathing is captured and recycled by intricate nasal passages before it ever escapes.

They avoid heat entirely, emerging only at night and retreating into humid burrows that trap just enough moisture to keep the system balanced.
