Chili peppers evolved to be hot, but their capsaicin isn't designed to hurt birds — it's designed to keep mammals away. Birds lack the TRPV1 receptor, the protein that triggers the burning sensation in humans and other mammals.
This means a bird can eat an entire chili without any discomfort, while a human feels the burn almost instantly. The seeds pass through the bird's digestive tract unharmed and are dropped far from the parent plant, helping the pepper spread.

Your Tattoo Is Fighting a War It Can Never Win
When the needle punches ink into your dermis, your immune system panics.
It sends in an army of cells called macrophages — cellular garbage collectors whose job is to swallow anything that doesn't belong. They swallow the ink. Problem solved. Except it isn't.
The pigment particles are too big, too stable, too weird for the macrophage to break down. So the cell just... holds onto it. Forever. Or at least until that cell d!es.

The tattoo didn't fade. New macrophages just took over the job.

Goats solve several of those problems at once, because they will eat almost anything green, including invasive and toxic plants, and they can climb ground that would be treacherous for a person carrying a chainsaw.
Every summer, cities and counties across the state rent herds by the hundred and set them loose on canyons, greenbelts, and the edges of neighborhoods.
