Laughter, The Best Medicine

Laughter is our reflex to something that tickles our funny bone, something which we find amusing; it is when we find, or see the humour – in a joke, an action or a situation.

It doesn’t matter what kind of humour you indulge in, whether you revel in the coarsest puns or dwell on nihilistic black humour. As long as you engage in this type of activity you keep your mind working, sharp and nimble. It is a prevention against depression, a truly therapeutic agent of positive self healing.

Whatever humour works for you, it is great. The important thing is to have a sense of humour. And not to lose your sense of humour no matter how tough life gets.

Apple Store

There are three Apple stores in Singapore. The latest one is most unique and interesting. It sits on the Marina bay reservoir just off the boardwalks. Fondly known as the ‘Floating’ Apple store, it looks like a glass orb – an all-glass spherical dome structure on water. Some people say that it looks like a spaceship – especially at night with the lights on. The store has been described as ‘architecturally stunning’ – and it is.

You can visit the store to see what new Apple products are in, or ask for help with your Apple products. And while you are there, you can get a different perspective of the panoramic views of the city skyline.

A bridge connects the Store to the boardwalk. However, that is for people exiting the store. The entrance to the store is at B2 Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

There is more to what you see of the Apple Store. There is an underground boardroom that connects the store to the main entrance which is at B2 Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands via an underwater tunnel. Within the Apple store at the Marina Bay Sands, there are also staff on hand to provide you product information and to help with technical issues.

The Apple store, together with the Louis Vuitton Store, ArtScience museum, and Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort, are all iconic buildings on the Marina Bay.

Dahlias

Dahlias are such pretty flowers. They are perennial plants with tuberous roots, and are one of 32,000 species from the Asteraceae family. Their blooms are big and colourful. Who wouldn’t fall in love with such vibrant blooms.

Here are some photos of the gorgeous dahlias close-up. These were taken in the flower dome in the Gardens by the Bay. In the dome, it is eternal spring. Flowers bloom all year round.

A Passing Shower

Dark clouds were coming in fast and furious. Rain would not be far away. Will the rain last, will it be a passing shower, or will the strong wind carry the rain clouds away before it really rains?

Tropical weather is difficult to predict – especially for a small island like Singapore. The sky can be blanketed in dark clouds in a couple of minutes. And it can clear just as quickly without it raining.

In this instance, it did rain - a passing shower. Fortunately, I made it back to shelter, and stayed dry. I had just had a quick tour of the new park, hastened by falling raindrops. I had a feeling that it might rain. That was why I didn’t stay as long as I had intended at the park.

I took this on the sheltered overhead bridge. It is not clear in the picture but raindrops were falling. The overhead bridge leads to a shopping center.

This is a rooftop 'beer garden' in the shopping center. You have a clearer picture of the rain.

So, an afternoon to the park marred by the rain. Never mind. That is life.

Okonomiyaki & Teppanyaki Restaurant

Last Saturday, I went out with some friends to a Japanese restaurant. I think that was my second time at a Teppanyaki Restaurant.

I am not familiar with Japanese cuisine. So, as with all my dining out with friends, if they opt for communal dining, I will usually leave them to order. I eat all food, whereas, some in the group do not eat certain food. Therefore, it is easier to leave them to order. In any case, my friends dine out more often and are more familiar with what is good, whereas I am quite clueless as to what’s on the menu. So, it is good to sit back and let them decide for me.

I remember there were meats – chicken, pork, lamb, beef, some vegetables and a salad, a dish of prawns...What are the names of the dishes – I do not know.

I know what a Teppanyaki restaurant is. It’s where they cook your food on a hot plate at your table. I assumed Okonomiyaki was the name of the restaurant. It was while writing this post this morning that out of curiosity, I looked up on Google to see what Okonomiyaki means.

Google says that: “Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savoury pancake dish consisting of wheat flour batter and other ingredients (mixed, or as toppings) cooked on a teppan (flat griddle). Common additions include cabbage, meat, and seafood, and toppings include okonomiyaki sauce (made with Worcestershire sauce, aonon (dried seaweed flakes), katsuobushi (bonito flakes), Japanese mayonnaise, and pickled ginger.”

Looking at the pictures now and thinking back, it all makes sense. Apart from the rice, salad and tiny prawns, the rest of the dishes are in the form of ‘pancakes’.

So, now I know what to expect when friends suggest we go to a Okonomiyaki and Tepannyaki restaurant. It won’t be my number one choice, but if my friends want to go, I wouldn’t mind. It is always good to try something different.

For dessert, we had cake. There is a birthday coming up for one of the girls in the group. Since we were not able to make it on the actual day, we thought we would celebrate her birthday in advance.

All in all, it was a nice evening spent with good company at a different venue with a different cuisine. Definitely, something different.
