Be around people who make you laugh. Laughter is not only the shortest distance between two people, laughter between two is sometimes a closer act of love than any other. Succulents

Venture into the desert without experiencing the heat and learn more about these prickly plants. You can do this at the Succulent Garden in the Flower dome at the Gardens by the Bay.

As water-storing desert plants, succulents belong to families such as Cacti, Aloes and Crassulas. Many of these species have sharp spines to protect themselves. A dense cover of blue or grey wax over the surface of their leaves and stems also helps protect them from dehydration and deflect excess UV light in the desert.

Here are some pictures from the Succulent Garden. The Echeveria elegans are symmetrical and so pleasing to look at. I think they are just beautiful.

There are many species of succulents. Within each specie, there are also many varieties. Apart from the common ones that stood out, one has to have a certain knowledge of succulents to tell them apart. I don't have that knowledge. So, in order not to confuse my readers, I will not try to name them - except for the one or two that I am sure of, identified by Google image, no less.

It was a beautiful day. It is now coming to the end of the year. This is when the N. E. Monsoon begins and there will be fewer days like this.

On a hot, humid day, these shades look so inviting. It would be lovely indeed to sit, or have a lay down in the shade.

I don't know what these plants are. They have chalkish green leaves, and purplish flowers.

Food for the Soul

Today, I take a break from posting about nature and food. I will post some food for the soul instead. I think it is important to take a break now and then from whatever is occupying us to contemplate about what else is going on in our lives and around us.

Most importantly, we need to pick up on the little lessons life is teaching us, so that we can be wiser and better people. For, what good is life without wisdom and sense? Without wisdom and sense, we will not appreciate what we have, nor enjoy life. We will not be happy.

Beaumontia Grandiflora

Beaumontia Grandiflora, is a sturdy, ever-blooming woody vine. They have huge, white, fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers resembling the Easter Lily. Showy was the word used to describe the flowers when they are in full bloom.

The Beaumontia Grandiflora thrives well in good soil, adequate water and hot moist conditions, and they are regarded as among the most outstanding vines of the world.

Large leaves which can reach nine inches long, are a glossy green colour with prominent veins.

Beaumontia plants are rampant climbers and they can grow from 3 to 10 metres wide if a strong support like in the picture is available.
