A Stroll Along Orchard Road

Orchard Road is an upscale shopping belt in the heart of the city. It is also a tourist attraction. One of the ‘must visit’ places if you go to Singapore. Here, you will find internationally branded department stores, restaurants, coffee houses, malls and more shopping malls. It is touted as a shopping haven – if you have the money.

It’s been a while since I have been down that way for a look. I thought it was time to go and have a look to see what’s new, and also to have a look at this year’s festive lights. From the middle of November till the following year, all two and a half kilometres of the shopping belt will be lighted up with decorative lights.

Here are some photos I took of the buildings along Orchard Road. I will leave the Christmas lights for the next post.

These two storey buildings in the heart of the city are worth a fortune. Once upon a time, someone told me he rented one of the place for 22K a month. Some of them are F&B outlets, but most of them are residences.

Carnivorous Plants

In the Cloud Forest, there is a ‘pond’ where carnivorous plants are grown on ‘islands’. Maybe, this is to keep them from taking a bite of the visitors when they are hungry. But, I think it is more likely to keep curious visitors from touching them.

On these islands, there are ‘Pitfall Trap’, The ‘Venus Fly-trap”, ‘Snap Trap’, ‘Suction Trap’. ‘Passive Glue Trap’, ‘Active Glue Trap’ and ‘Lobster Pot Trap’.

Do carnivorous plants starve and die when they do not have enough to eat? I wondered. And there, on the sign was this - “Carnivorous plants will not starve to death if they are unable to catch and digest insects. They will just grow more slowly and produce fewer flowers and seeds.” I bet you learned something new today too.

There was another sign warning visitors not to touch the plants, or they will be fed to them. They probably have to do it bit by bit, since I don’t think the plant can consume a human whole like they did with a fly. I wonder if anyone was last seen visiting the ‘Cloud Forest’.

Barriers

I don’t know the correct term for this – a barrier? Gate?

This is the subject for my entry for the 'Shadow Hunter' contest this week.

This barrier / gate in particular, is along a ‘park-connector’, to stop unauthorized vehicles from using the road. The ‘park-connector’, as the name implies connects all parks on the island, and is popular with joggers, walkers, cyclists... It is a popular route and gets rather busy, especially in the mornings and early evenings.

Cloud Forest

The Cloud Forest is one of the attractions of The Gardens by the Bay.

The Cloud Forest at the Gardens by the bay is “home to one of the world’s largest indoor waterfalls with a lush mountain clad with plants from around the world.” If you are keen to know more about the Cloud Forest, have a look 👉 HERE

The moment you enter the dome is the “Wow” moment. This replica of a water fall and “‘mountain’ clad with plants” will take your breath away.

For those who are interested in the vegetations of a cloud forest, you will find this very interesting. Even if nature - plants and flowers are not your thing, you will still enjoy your visit to this awesome place.

If these interest you and you like to know what else is in the Cloud Forest, keep a look out for this space. I took a load of pictures on my recent visit. It is a photographer's playground. Doubly so if you are a naturalist - I mean, if you are into vegetations and habitats of the cloud forest.
