Gazanias, aka Treasure Flowers

Gazanias, sometimes called treasure flowers, are a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. They produce large, daisy-like composite flower heads in brilliant shades of yellow and orange, over a long period in summer.

Gazanias are grown for the brilliant colour of their flower heads which appear in the late spring and are often in bloom throughout the summer into autumn. They might halt flowering in extreme summer heat, but will often resume its vivid display with the onset of fall. The foliage is low-lying, making it suitable for ornate ground cover or vibrant displays in containers and baskets. - Wikipedia

I love these colourful aster shaped flowers. The colours are ‘rich and sweet’. These are from the Flower dome.

Paraprosdokians

Some humour is straight forward. You see, or hear them, and you burst out laughing. Others are more subtle. You need a second or two, to see the humour in them.

Paraprosdokians are an example, the punch line is dropped a second or two later, giving what was said an entirely different meaning, wherein lies the humour. You will notice a lot of these in comedy shows. Stand-Up comedians use them a lot to get the laughs too.

Enjoy this selection of paraprosdokians. May your week ahead be filled with laughter.

Writing

Once upon a time, when I was little, I dreamt of becoming a writer. However, very soon, I realized that I can only dream about it. I realized I was not cut out to be a writer. I lack all the qualities a good writer has – creativity, eloquence, and patience. Eventually, I recognized my limits and knew that it would be futile to be pursuing something I have no hope of succeeding in, something I am not good at. Perhaps, I was also not passionate enough.

If you want to try your hand at writing, here are some advice, and motivation from published authors for you.

Omit needless words. Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell. - William Strunk

A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit. - Richard Bach

All there is to writing is having ideas. To learn to write is to learn to have ideas. - Robert Frost

If you write a page a day, you will be an author of a thick book in a year. Great results will take shape when small efforts are continually put in over time. - Unknown

Nothing you write, if you hope to be good, will ever come out as you first hoped. - Lillian Hellman

The first page sells that book. The last page sells your next book. - Mickey Spillane

The waste basket is the writer's best friend. - Isaac Singer

The way you define yourself as a writer is that you write every time you have a free minute. If you didn’t behave that way you would never do anything. - John Irving

When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing. - Enrique Jardiel Poncela

Write what you like, then imbue it with life and make it unique by blending in your own personal knowledge of life, friendship, relationships, sex, and work. - Stephen King

Kinetic Rain

I took the following video when I was at the airport recently. The sculpture is called ‘Kinetic Rain’. Since I don’t know anything about kinetics and sculptures, I will refer you to Wikipedia for more information on this Sculpture installation. The moving sculpture is quite mesmerising to watch.

Watch the video 👉 Here

“Kinetic Rain is a moving sculpture at Singapore Changi Airport. It was installed in early July 2012 in the departure check-in hall of Terminal 1 as part of the terminal's refurbishment.  Spanning an area of 75 square metres (810 sq ft) and a height of 7.3 metres (24 ft), it has been billed as the world's largest kinetic sculpture.

“The installation consists of two separate segments, installed several meters apart. Each segment consists of 608 copper-plated aluminum raindrops, each weighing 180 grams (6.3 oz) and is suspended by a thin wire. Computer-controlled motors attached to the wires can move each raindrop up and down independently, thereby allowing the raindrops to form elaborate moving shapes. The installation is programmed to arrange the raindrops such that they create the contour of flight-related objects such as an airplane, kite or hot air balloon during a 15-minute loop.

“Kinetic Rain was created over a period of two years by artists, animators and programmers from the German design firm Art+Com. Its cost has not been made public. According to Art+Com, the sculpture "aims to be a source of identity for its location, and provides a moment for passengers to contemplate and reflect".”

Inspire To Aspire

It is said that one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. If that were so, a handful of these inspiring and motivational thoughts would go a long way.

I hope the following aphorisms will nudge you along life’s journey when you need it most. Maybe you don’t need them now. But keep the ones you like, the ones that resonate with you. You might need them some day to inspire, and motivate yourself.

A clay pot sitting in the sun will always be a clay pot. It has to go through the white heat of the furnace to become porcelain. - Mildred W. Struven

We win half the battle when we make up our minds to take the world as we find it, including the thorns. - Orison Swett Marden

It is not joy that makes us grateful. It is gratitude that makes us joyful. - David Rast

We have to learn to be our own best friends because we fall too easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies. - Roderick Thorp

Don’t let something that doesn’t matter make you lose something that does. - Unknown

Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t. - Bill Nye

Don’t complain about someone not treating you right. If you know you deserve better, why are you with them? - Unknown

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds! - Bod Marley

Never think of any right effort as being fruitless – all right effort bears good fruit, whether we see results or not. - Unknown

Forget past mistakes and forget failures. Forget everything except what you are going to do now and do it. - William J. Durant

Life is Suffering

Life is suffering. To live, to be alive is suffering. You have to understand, and accept that suffering is a part of life.

We can’t avoid suffering, but we can lessen our suffering by understanding why we are suffering. When there is understanding and when there is acceptance, there is less suffering. The more you understand, the lesser you suffer. Sometimes, all we need to do to avoid suffering is to let go, and accept what comes.

We suffer from the fear and uncertainty of the unknown. What we do not know or understand, we imagine the worst and hence, we fear. We have a hard time letting go of this fear and so we continue to suffer again and again. The answer to that, then, would be to look at what is making you suffer. Once you find the cause, you can take preventive measures. And if there is nothing you can do about it, you just have to face up to what’s coming your way. That is Life.

Stop clinging to things, to people. Clinging is suffering. Let go, and accept.

People suffer because they are caught in their views. As soon as we release those views, we are free and we don’t suffer any more. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Suffering is due entirely to clinging or resisting; it is a sign of our unwillingness to move on, to flow with life. - Nisargadatta Maharaj

The man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears. - Michel de Montaigne

There are more things to alarm us than to harm us, and we suffer more often in apprehension than reality. - Seneca

We can put an end to our suffering just by realizing that our suffering is not worth suffering for. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Flower Photography

I am not really a photography enthusiast. However, with cell phone cameras so convenient to use, sometimes I will take a photo of whatever caught my eye. Most of the photos taken are quite ordinary. Once in a while, some turn out to be quite nice shots.

Here are some flower shots which turned out to be quite decent.

Laughter, The Best Medicine

Laughter helps you to enjoy life even when you do not have everything you want. Laughter might not solve your problems, but it will help to take the edge off your difficult moments. Always laugh when you can. Life is more bearable when you laugh. And it doesn’t matter if you revel in the coarsest puns or the raunchiest jokes. As long as we keep our sense of humour, we keep the doom and gloom at bay.

The following images are taken from Facebook pages and Whatsapp messages.

Quote Worthy

I am passionate about aphorisms. I started taking an interest in them at an early age. It used to be just proverbs, axioms, and maxims... Later on, I will take note of anything that resonates with me. I am still doing that now.

I firmly believe that there is a lot you can learn from these wise sayings of men who have gone on before us. They are condensed knowledge of Life, and Life experiences, and they serve as a record of lessons on Life.

Take an interest in them. They will help you with the Mastery of Life. We do not have enough time to learn all about Life ourselves. However, if we can learn from the failures and successes of others, we could save ourselves not only time, but also heartaches.

Have a look at today’s selection of Aphorisms.

If a man write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, tho’ he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

What a superb thing it would be if we were all big enough in soul to see no slights, accept no insults, cherish no jealousies, and admit into our hearts no hatred. - Elbert Hubbard

He who receives an idea from me receives instruction for himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine receives light without darkening me. - Thomas Jeffeson

When all is summed up, a man never speaks of himself without loss; his accusations of himself are always believed; his praises never. - Michel de Montaigne

The less talent they have, the more pride, vanity and arrogance they have, All these fools, however, find other fools who applaud them. - Erasmus

It is wise to remember that the person who follows the crowd will get no further than the crowd. The person who walks the creative path is likely to find they are in places no one has ever been before. - Bob Proctor

More powerful than all the success slogans ever penned by human hand is the realization for every man that he has but one boss. That boss is the man – he – himself. - Gabriel Heatter

Our belief at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking is the one thing that insures the successful outcome of our venture. - William James
