The Cloud Forest Dome

Cloud Forest Dome

This is the cloud forest dome. Inside the dome is a 35m-tall waterfall, said to be the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. On the side of the waterfall is a steel structure clad with thousands of plants giving it the appearance of a lush mountain, as well as a vertical garden.

There is a lift to take visitors to the top. From there you make your way down using various walkways. As you make your way down, you can take a walk along the cloud walk, the tree top walk and visit any of the attractions in there, where you can learn about the characteristics of cloud forest habitats from around the world.

You will be wowed by this attraction in the Gardens by The Bay, in Singapore.

Reflection Hunting

I was looking to see what shops were in the shopping complex. The moment I stepped in, I noticed the floor looked squeaky clean and had a shine which reflected the lights and sign boards clearly. That reminded me to take some pictures for my Reflection Hunter contest. And this will be my theme for this week’s reflection contest – Reflections of signs.

Exploring A New Area

Although Singapore is a small island, and I have lived here all my life, I have been to only a few areas on the island. There is still plenty of the island to explore, if I were so inclined. Unfortunately, I am not an explorer. I am more of a home body.

However, I do go out once in a while. Sometimes, friends would suggest a place I haven’t been before. I would be secretly pleased that I am ‘force to explore’ a new place. Unfortunately, my friends are not the active, or sporting type. The prefer the more sedate and laid back lifestyle, like checking out a new bar or restaurant, whereas I would much prefer to check out a walking trail, a garden, or a park.

Anyhow, on a friend’s suggestion to try out a new restaurant in Paya Lebar, an area I have never been to, I went down a bit earlier to have a look at the surrounding area. I looked up the place on google map first. The area was developed not too long ago. From what I can see, it is another area of shopping complexes, and offices. After getting a rough idea of the surrounding area, I set out to ‘explore’ the place.

It was just as I expected. Building complexes of shopping malls with shops, and more shops, F&B outlets, and offices. The train arrives in the midst of these buildings. So, the place is convenient to get to.

Bukit Gombak Park

I have a regular walk route. But sometimes, I take a different route for my walk – for a change, for something different. Last Saturday, I decided to take a walk to the Bukit Gombak Park. Walking to the park, then a stroll in the park, and back, took about an hour. It was a very pleasant change from my regular walk route.

That was my second time to the park since it opened about nine months ago. It is not a very big park. But it has enough attractions for the whole family. There is a ‘Dog Run’, a butterfly garden, a community garden, a children’s playground, and a restaurant too.

Just behind the restaurant are the steps leading up to the park.

There is a dog run. But there were no dogs in sight when I was there. I am sure there will be later on, when the sun is setting. It was still a bit hot when I was there at about half past four in the afternoon.

A butterfly garden. There must be flowers in the butterfly garden. And indeed there were. Pretty flowers everywhere. There were plenty of butterflies too. Unfortunately, they were all too busy to stop for a moment or two to pose for photos. I chased a couple of them for a bit, but gave up when I realised that it is quite impossible to take pictures of them.

I don’t know the names of most of the plants and flowers. But, here are some that I do know. Beautiful bamboo orchid.

These were the community garden plots when I first visited the park when it opened.

These are the plots now. Residents in the area who are interested in a bit of gardening can rent these plots from the National Parks department. After that, you can plant flowers, grow vegetables, herbs and spices... Basically, anything you are interested in. These garden plots are very popular. They are taken up very quickly and there is always a waiting line for one to become available.

Bitter gourds. They are very prone to attacks from insects. That is why they have to be covered up.

This is the front of the houses. This looks like a nice quiet neighbourhood.

Shadow Hunters

I was early for an appointment. Since it was an area I have not been to, I thought I would have a walk around the area and see what is there. The first thing of interest that caught my eyes were the shadows of bicycles in the bicycle parking lot. I snapped a few shots quickly and went on my way. I am sure the commuters at the bus stop must be wondering what I was doing.
