Some interesting fun facts about birds – courtesy of Facebook pages ‘Plant Care Today’, ‘Wild Wonders’, ‘David Attenborough’, etc… However, I do not know if they are true. Some of them sound really incredible.

I watched it happen on a February branch, temperature barely above freezing, when a waxwing plucked a dried crabapple and didn't eat it. Instead, she turned and offered it sideways to the bird beside her. He took it in his beak, rotated his head, and passed it on. Then again. Then again. Fourteen birds touched that single fruit before someone finally swallowed.

This wasn't hunger. It was conversation.

Cedar waxwings don't have territories like robins or mockingbirds. They don't defend a patch of earth or a favourite shrub. They live as nomads, following fruit wherever it ripens, which means their survival depends entirely on cooperation with birds they might have met just days ago. So they've developed something more valuable than aggression: a ritual that says *I trust you, and you can trust me.*

The berry passing isn't random. It moves in sequence, bird to bird, each one holding it briefly before offering it to a neighbour. Sometimes the fruit makes it back to the original bird. Sometimes it disappears halfway down the line. The outcome doesn't seem to matter. What matters is the exchange itself, the physical proof that this flock operates as a collective, that no individual will hoard while others watch.

Scientists used to think this only happened during courtship, a kind of edible gift between mates. But waxwings pass berries in January and July, in mixed flocks of strangers, long after breeding season ends. The behaviour isn't about romance. It's about building a network of birds who will share information when the next fruit tree is found, who will mob a hawk together, who won't fracture under pressure.

Young waxwings learn everything this way. They watch which berries get passed and which get ignored. They notice when older birds avoid certain fruit, even if it looks perfect. That knowledge can't be inherited. It has to be taught, berry by berry, through patience that looks like play but functions as education.

In a garden, you can see this if you plant in clusters instead of scattering single specimens. Waxwings need abundance, but they also need gathering spots, branches where a dozen birds can land shoulder to shoulder without competition. A lone serviceberry might feed one waxwing. Ten serviceberries planted close become a meeting hall.

I've started thinking of my fruit-bearing shrubs differently now. They're not just food sources. They're diplomacy tables. Every crabapple, every viburnum berry, every dried holly fruit becomes an opportunity for birds to practice the small acts of generosity that hold a flock together when the world turns cold and uncertain.

Why has this bird been kept off your feed? Because it lives in one of the most remote places on Earth — Ethiopia's highlands, 1,500 to 3,400 meters up, where few researchers go.

Here is the reality check. The thick-billed raven has been hiding in plain sight as the undisputed MVP of the crow family.

Size and power. This bird averages three pounds. Not feathers — muscle and bone. Males can weigh up to 3.3 pounds and stand almost 28 inches tall. That makes it the heavyweight champion of the songbird world, thicker and stronger than any raven in North America or Europe.

The most powerful beak of any songbird — period. At nearly 3.5 inches long, its beak is the longest of any perching bird on Earth — laterally compressed and deeply curved like a raptor's talon.

This beak does two impossible things. When scavenging at carcasses, it tears through tough hides and cracks open bones to access marrow. When most people think about fast-running animals, birds rarely come to mind. Yet the ostrich is one of the most impressive runners on Earth.
