There is so much in the deep sea that we are unaware of. Here are some trivia, fun facts on the creatures of the sea, courtesy of Facebook pages ‘Wildest Facts’, ‘Strangest Facts’, ‘Brainy Monkey’, ‘David Attenborough’ etc… However, I do not know if they are true. Some of them sound really incredible.

3,840 feet below Antarctica, scientists just discovered something that looks more like it belongs on another planet than Earth.

In the freezing, pitch-black waters off the coast of Antarctica, scientists have uncovered a deep-sea marvel that’s straight out of a sci-fi movie: a newly discovered feather star with 20 arms and a strawberry-shaped body. Its official name? Promachocrinus fragarius.

This strange creature was found lurking at a depth of 3,840 feet, where sunlight never reaches and life moves to a rhythm we barely understand. With its delicate, feather-like arms and alien form, this echinoderm is not just a bizarre beauty it’s a living clue to the mysteries of deep-ocean evolution.

Feather stars belong to the same family as starfish and sea urchins, but this new species takes things to another level. Some of its arms are short and stubby, while others twist and wave like tentacles, helping it swim, feed, and navigate the ocean’s most unforgiving environment.

What’s especially fascinating is that Promachocrinus fragarius was hiding in plain sight part of a group once thought to include just one species. Now, researchers believe there are at least eight distinct species in this family, dramatically changing how we understand Antarctic biodiversity.

This is the FRIED EGG JELLYFISH – The Jellyfish That Looks Like Breakfast!

This deep-sea creature is called a YETI CRAB, a pale white crab named for the hair-like bristles covering its claws and legs.

It lives in the darkness of the deep ocean, often near hydrothermal vents where superheated mineral-rich water rises from the seafloor.

Those “hairs” are not just for looks, they can host bacteria that help the crab survive in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

Sea cucumber. You have seen them on documentaries – slow, squishy, harmless. That is the lie.

This animal has turned its rear end into a multi‑tool of survival. It breathes through its anus. It eats through its anus. And when a predator attacks, it weaponizes its anus.

Hidden inside its anus is a specialized organ called the Cuvierian organ. When a crab or fish gets too close, the sea cucumber tears a hole in its own anus wall and violently ejects its entire intestine and stomach out of that same opening – directly into the attacker's face.

Those organs expand up to 20 times their original size into a cloud of sticky, spaghetti‑like threads. The threads are laced with a powerful toxin called holothurin. Predators get entangled, poisoned, and quickly learn to stay away.

But the sea cucumber does not stop there. If the predator persists, the animal initiates a final chemical blast called a "cuke nuke" – so deadly it can kill most organisms on contact.

Now here is the part that breaks brains. After shooting out its own guts, the sea cucumber does not die. It cannot eat for a few weeks, so it absorbs nutrients directly through its skin. Then, in as little as 15 days, it fully regrows its entire Cuvierian organ, ready to blast again.
