What an amazing world we live in. Our planet is far more complex, adaptive, and mysterious than we give it credit for. Here are some interesting phenomena discovered across the globe – courtesy of Facebook pages ‘Strangest Facts’, ‘David Attenborough’, etc… However, I do not know if they are true. Some of them sound really incredible.

Hidden among the giant sand dunes of southwestern Peru, Huacachina is one of the world’s most extraordinary desert oasis villages. Located just a few kilometers from the city of Ica, the small community is built around a peaceful natural lagoon surrounded by towering golden dunes.

Although only a small number of people live there permanently, Huacachina attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to experience sandboarding, dune buggy adventures, and the unique beauty of the desert landscape.

The oasis has become one of Peru’s most iconic travel destinations and was even featured on the country’s 50 nuevo sol banknote in the 1990s. A dolphin discovered how to turn a fish reward into a fish empire. The animal outsmarted both trainers and seagulls in the process.

The dolphin learned that bringing litter to trainers earned a fish treat. She eventually brought dead seagulls that had fallen into the pool for the same reward. The dolphin realized she could create more seagulls to trade by catching them herself.

She began hiding fish under a rock at the edge of the pool. The bait attracted live gulls who landed to steal the fish. The dolphin waited underwater and grabbed the gulls when they came close. She then presented the dead birds to trainers for even more fish.

The dolphin repeated this cycle multiple times, becoming a seagull hunter as a side job. Trainers were amazed by her problem-solving abilities. No one had taught her to use bait or plan a multi-step reward system.

China did not attempt to slow the advance of the desert with walls of concrete. Instead, it turned to one of nature's oldest tools: trees.

In 1978, China launched the Three-North Shelter Forest Program, an ambitious environmental project designed to reduce desertification and protect northern regions from the expanding influence of the Gobi Desert. Stretching across thousands of miles, the initiative has become one of the largest ecological restoration efforts ever undertaken.

The scale is extraordinary. Over the decades, billions of trees have been planted to help stabilize soil, reduce wind erosion, and create protective green belts across vulnerable landscapes.

Yet the challenge has never been simple.

Deserts are dynamic environments shaped by drought, wind, climate, and soil conditions. Many early planting efforts struggled as some tree species proved poorly suited to harsh local conditions. These setbacks forced researchers and planners to adapt, improving species selection and restoration techniques over time.

That ongoing process is what makes the project so remarkable.

Rather than a single construction effort, it is a long-term collaboration between science, nature, and persistence. Each season brings new lessons about how vegetation, soil, water, and climate interact across vast landscapes.

Still underway today, with completion planned around 2050, the project stands as one of the world's most ambitious attempts to restore degraded land and reduce the effects of desertification.

Imagine sharing the ocean with a shark that was born around 1620.

This ancient Greenland shark was already gliding through Arctic waters shortly after Shakespeare's time. It was alive when the Mayflower crossed the Atlantic, when Isaac Newton changed science forever, when the United States gained independence, when Napoleon reshaped Europe, when the Titanic met its fate, and through both World Wars.

406 years. One shark.

Growing at less than one centimetre each year, this remarkable animal does not reach maturity until around 150 years of age. It moves through the icy depths at a slow pace of about 1.6 miles per hour, yet it has witnessed more human history than any person ever could.

But despite surviving centuries of change, its future is far from secure.

Around 3,500 Greenland sharks are accidentally caught and killed in fishing gear every year. For a species that needs roughly 150 years just to become capable of reproducing, those losses are devastating.

The neon springs of Dallol, Ethiopia, boil at over 100 Celsius.

They glow neon yellow and green - colors produced entirely by sulfate minerals and copper salts, not by anything alive.

Their pH drops below zero - more corrosive than battery acid. A major 2019 study found no life in the harshest pools despite the liquid water.
