Motivating and Inspiring You

Enjoy this selection of motivational and inspirational quotes on, and about cutting yourself some slack. A reminder that it’s okay to mess up once in a while. You are human, after all. And it is also all right to think of yourself first, once in a while.

You have to love yourself and be kind to yourself. Only you know what you are going through, what you are constantly trying to overcome, and how hard your life is. But that's okay. It is your life, your journey, and you have to take to the road on your own. Just don't give up on yourself.

Take a rest, or take a break when you are tired. Things might take a little time to right itself, but if you do not give up, all will turn out well in the end.

Hibiscus Moscheutos

The botanical name is Hibiscus Moscheutos. It is also commonly known as Hibiscus, Rose Mallows, or Swamp Mallows. They are a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. They are generally divided into four groups: Hardy Hibiscus, Rose of Sharon, Tropical Hibiscus, and the rest of the species are simply known as Hibiscus.

Hibiscus have dark green leaves; flowers are big, colourful, and trumpet-shaped, with colours ranging from white to pink, red, blue, orange, yellow, peach.

Hibiscus is a perennial plant and flowers through the year. They are widely cultivated as ornamental plants for their showy flowers or used as landscape shrubs, and are used to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. As it comes in a variety of colours, it's a plant which can add vibrancy to any garden.

Hibiscus are hardy, versatile plants in tropical conditions. They are easy to plant. Cut a section of a branch and stick it in the soil. Initially, make sure they have enough water, and are out of direct sunlight. They can also be grown in pots. Just make sure that the pot has drainage holes. Although Hibiscus like water, over-saturation of the roots will cause them to rot.

Uses of Hibiscus flower

It is reported that Hibiscus flowers steeped in boiling water produce a delicious and healthy tea which has a taste said to resemble cranberry juice. The tea is said to lower blood pressure, and contains numerous valuable vitamins and essential fatty acids.

Dried hibiscus flowers are edible. They can be candied and used as a garnish, usually for desserts. Some varieties are used as vegetables, and as a souring ingredient for local dishes.

Some hibiscus species are said to have a number of medical uses in Indian Ayurveda.

Since there are so many varieties and groups of hibiscus, I am not sure if all of them share the same properties and uses.

An interesting fact about the hibiscus flower. It is a national and state symbol of many countries. I don't think I have come across any flower that is the national flower of some many countries.

It is a national symbol of Haiti; the national flower of South Korea, Malaysia, and of nations including the Solomon Islands and Niue and the state flower of Hawaii.

Different colours, different varieties of hibiscus.

Laugh. It Is Cheap Medicine

Laughter is our reflex to something that tickles our funny bone, our reflex to something which we find amusing. It is when we find, or see the humour – in a joke, an action or a situation.

It doesn’t matter what kind of humour you like to indulge yourself in, as long as it makes you laugh. Humour has an intellectual, as well as emotional element. Since we are all different, we respond to different types of humour. The important thing is to take things easy. See the humour in your everyday life. Laugh whenever you can. And where possible, help to spread some laughter wherever you go.

I hope the following selection of humour will bring on a chuckle, or put a smile on your face. Have a great weekend!

Whoever drinks beer, he is quick to sleep. Whoever sleeps long, does not sin. Whosoever does not sin, enters Heaven! Thus, let us drink beer! - Unknown

Books can also provoke emotions. And emotions sometimes are even more troublesome than ideas. Emotions have led people to do all sorts of things they later regret-like, oh, throwing a book at someone else. - Pseudonymous Bosch

No illusion is more crucial than the illusion that great success and huge money buy you immunity from the common ills of mankind, such as cars that won't start. - Larry McMurtry

Creeper/Climber Plant

Creepers and Climbers are terms used in botany to describe certain plants. Sometimes, the terms are used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between creepers and climbers. Not all creepers are climbers and not all climbers are creepers. But that is lesson for another time.

Today, the spotlight is on this creeper/climber plant I know not the name of. I saw this in the Gardens by the Bay. I was impressed with how they 'train' the plant to climb and creep all over the structure. I was also impressed by the beautiful blooms all over the canopy.

The flowers, white and purplish in colour, are absolutely gorgeous.

Food For Thought

Learning is a never ending process. We do not stop learning when we leave school. In fact, it is when we stepped into society, that’s where the real learning begins. We learn what is important in life. And we learn that there is so much about life that school didn’t prepare us for. You have to learn all of life’s painful lessons, one at a time.

However, we can do ourselves a favour by learning from those who had gone on before us. People who had experienced the same hardship in life - the sages, gurus, philosophers, poets and writers of old. They are our treasured teachers. Learn from them, and you might just save yourself a few heartaches.

Take a look at today’s selection of 'Food for Thought'. Learn what you can.

The hardest thing you can do is smile when you are ill, in pain, or depressed. But this no-cost remedy is a necessary first half-step if you are to start on the road to recovery. - Allen Klein

Wise men profit more from fools than fools from wise men; for the wise men shun the mistakes of fools, but fools do not imitate the successes of the wise. - Cato the Elder

It’s a feature of our age that if you write a work of fiction, everyone assumes that the people and events in it are disguised biography – but if you write your biography, it’s equally assumed you’re lying your head off. - Margaret Atwood

Five enemies of peace inhabit with us – avarice, ambition, envy, anger, and pride; if these were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace. - Petrarca Petrarch

History of mankind has been marked by progression and destruction. Everyone is duty bound to learn from the past and help shape the destiny of our future generations. - Unknown

We are what we think; as we desire so do we become! By our thoughts, desires, and habits, we either ascend to the full divine dignity of our nature, or we descend to suffer and learn. - J.Todd Ferrier

There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them. But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there. - Paulo Coelho

A clean confession, combined with a promise never to commit the sin again, when offered before one who has the right to receive it, is the purest type of repentance. - Mahatma Gandhi

Our real enemies are the people who make us feel so good that we are slowly, but inexorably, pulled down into the quicksand of smugness and self-satisfaction. - Sydney Harris

The charm of history and its enigmatic lesson consist in the fact that, from age to age, nothing changes and yet everything is completely different. - Aldous Huxley

We are built to conquer environment, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction or happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve. - Maxwell Maltz

The winners in life think constantly in terms of I can, I will, and I am. Losers, on the other hand, concentrate their waking thoughts on what they should have or would have done, or what they can’t do. - Denis Waitley

Dark Sky, Bright Sky

Weather permitting, I take walks on days when nobody wants to have anything to do with me - which is, fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how and who looks at it, most days. Recently, the weather hasn't been very cooperative. It rained on most days at the time when I was supposed to go for my walk.

There have been a couple of occasions when the following scenes happened. I looked out of my bedroom window, and it was all dark sky. But from my window in the hall, it was bright and sunny.

Sometimes, it poured while I was deliberating whether to take a chance. Other times, it remained that way for a while and then the rain clouds disappeared.

However, that should be all passed now, because generally, our weather is more like the following on most days - cloudy, hot and humid.

Here are a few more examples of half sunny, half dark skies.
