Friendships

Friendships are fragile things, and require as much handling as any other fragile and precious thing. Like a glass that is broken, there will always be cracks no matter how you try to fix it. Hence, we have to tread carefully with our friends.

Understand that friendships never stay the same; they are like the weather – constantly changing, unpredictable and varying in temperature. That is natural. Nothing can remain the same or constant all the time. There is bound to be ups and downs in everything. Which is why it is very important that there has to be give and take, understanding, acceptance and forgiveness in a friendship.

Good friends are hard to come by. So, be sure to put in a little effort to cultivate a friendship if you come across anyone whom you think is worthy to be a friend. After all, it has been said that in a friendship, there is the magical warmth of the human heart that surpasses the power of medicine.

It is important to our friends to believe that we are unreservedly frank with them, and important to the friendship that we are not. - Mignon McLaughlin

Do not mistake friendship for a license to tell the truth. More pain has been inflicted by indiscriminate truth telling than by lies. Honesty too often means being hurtful and wounding someone. As long as you keep true counsel with yourself, it does not hurt if you dissemble with a friend. - Unknown

Friendship will not stand the strain of very much good advice for very long. - Robert Lynd

Don’t flatter yourself that friendship authorizes you to say disagreeable things to your intimates. The nearer you come into relation with a person, the more necessary do tact and courtesy become. - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil – but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small silly presents every so often – just to save it from drying out completely. - Pam Brown

Few things tend more to alienate friendship than a want of punctuality in our engagements. I have known the breach of a promise to dine or sup to break up more than one intimacy. - William Hazlitt
