Close-up Shots of Flowers

Some close up shots of flowers. These were taken with my cell phone camera. They turned up better than I expected.

A flower is also sometimes called a bloom or blossom. They are the reproductive structure in flowering plants.

Witty Quips

Life is stressful. People are constantly under so much pressure they forget how to laugh. People should laugh more. Laughter keeps the depressing thoughts away. It could well be a means of prevention against depression.

Take a look at today’s quips, remember the ones you like and go make your friends laugh. You will be doing mankind a service if you can go around and make people laugh. At the same time, you will make yourself very popular.

Dinner/Gathering

Last Friday, I had a dinner cum birthday celebration at my friend, Ernest’s house. There were ten of us, including Ernest, the host. As usual, Ernest cooked up a scrumptious meal for us.

Beautiful table top display. The vases are Ernest's works of art.

Salad with Mozzarella cheese
Cheese and cold cuts
Assortment of bread
Prawns sauteed with herbs and spices
Baked chicken with tomato cream cheese sauce
Lamb shank stewed in red wine sauce with mushrooms, carrots, and celery.
Italian noodles
It was a rich, scrumptious dinner.
Fruits after dinner
There were cakes too as we were celebrating two birthday boys in the group. All in all, it was another lovely day and evening spent with a group of friends of 37 years.

SAFRA Club

SAFRA, or Singapore Armed Forces Reservists Association, was formed as a social and recreational club for National Servicemen from the Singapore Armed Forces. This was to reward servicemen for their service to the nation. It aimed to be a “dynamic institution effective in bonding NSmen through a network of quality lifestyle clubs, services and activities.”

The Choa Chu Kang SAFRA club is the 7th and the newest, opened only three months ago. It is nestled in a corner of the Choa Chu Kang park. Since it is near where I am staying, I went to have a look at the club – ‘to check it out’, as they say.

When you join as a member, some of the facilities in the club are free to use. Others, as a member, you are entitled to a discount on the charges.

Here are some pictures of the club.

Afternoon Walk

Some people like to take the same route when they go for their walks, while others like to take different routes. There are advantages and benefits to both. It depends on the indiviual’s preference. Personally, I prefer the same route, because I feel more comfortable seeing the familiar sights and faces. Plus, I get to see my acquaintances – regulars who I have come to know.

However, every now and then, I will take a diverted route and do something different.

Here are some pictures of my walk route. This is the other side of the canal of my usual walk route.

Food For Thought

Words are powerful stuff. They can motivate, inspire and educate us. When I come across words that resonate with me, I will take a note of them and add them to my collection. I have been doing that since my school days. They have taught me a great deal about life. It is great to understand what the quote says, and equally great to know that someone thought along the same lines as me, and put it more eloquently.
It is easy to judge. It’s more difficult to understand. Understanding requires compassion, patience, and a willingness to believe that good hearts sometimes choose poor methods. Through judging, we separate. Through understanding, we grow. - Doe Zantamata

The most beautiful experience we can have is the most mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed. - Albert Einstein

We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it – and stop there; lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove-lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove-lid again – and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cold one any more. - Mark Twain

The highest good for man is the desire to do good. The particulars of that good, in words or terms, are not important, for no human concept of good can embrace the perfection and absolute good of Being. - Validivar

The need for justice grows out of the conflict of human interests. That is to say, if there were no conflict of interests among mankind we should never have invented the word justice, nor conceived the idea for which it stands. - Thomas Nixon Carver

People suffer because they are caught in their views. As soon as we release those views, we are free and we don’t suffer anymore. Mindfulness helps you go home to the present. Life is available only in the present. - Thich Nhat Hanh

There are moments when troubles enter our lives and we can do nothing to avoid them. But they are there for a reason. Only when we have overcome them will we understand why they were there. - Paulo Coelho

The greatest degree of inner tranquillity comes from the development of love and compassion. The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. - Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama

Orchard Road - Once Upon A Time

Photos are courtesy of ‘The Long and Winding Road’, ‘Heritage SG Memories' and 十里之外 Facebook pages.
Orchard Road, often known colloquially as simply Orchard, is a major 2.5 km (1.6 mi)–long road in the Central Area of Singapore. A famous tourist attraction, it is an upscale shopping area, with numerous internationally renowned department stores, restaurants and coffeehouses located in its vicinity.

Orchard Road got its name from the nutmeg, pepper and fruit orchards, or the plantations that the road once led to. Such plantations were common in the area in the 19th century.

After more than a century as a two-way thoroughfare, Orchard Road became a one-way street east of Scotts Road in 1974, and entirely in 1977 when Orchard Boulevard was completed. The ever-lively street starts at the junction with Orange Grove Road which is the location of the Orchard Hotel. It then stretches southeast across the Scotts Road–Paterson Hill junction, Orchard MRT station, Bideford Road, Somerset MRT station, Central Expressway, Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, and ends at the junction with Handy Road (just before Prinsep Street), where it becomes Bras Basah Road. It has an extensive underground infrastructure, including underground pedestrian walkways between the malls running underneath the street and other streets in the vicinity.
