Mid-Autumn Festival At Gardens By The Bay - II

Today, I will show you photos of the lanterns on display in the Gardens by the Bay, and the supertrees when the lights come on. Some of the lantern displays are inspired by Chinese mythological tales. Signs beside the lantern displays narrate the tale that inspired the display.

Supertrees in the evenings when the lights came on.

This lantern display is inspired by the tale of The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. It showcases a flock of magpies forming a bridge with their wings to reunite the lovers.

“Legend has it that though deeply in love, their romance was forbidden by the heavens and thus, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl were separated by the milky way and not allowed to meet again. The Weaver Girl must sit forever on one side of the milky way, sadly weaving on her loom while the Cowherd could only watch her from afar, longing to be reunited again. Moved by their love, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, which is also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day.”

“The Lanna Lanterns highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of the Lanna people, serving as captivating reminders of the profound depth of Lanna culture and the joyous celebrations that exemplify its essence.”

The Butterfly Lovers
“Inspired by one of the four great folklore of China, The Butterfly Lovers, this lantern set reimagines a scene in the poignant romance story between protagonists Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, where the star-crossed lovers are reunited in death and transformed into a pair of butterflies.”
