Gluttons Bay

Gluttons bay is on the promenade and near the Esplanade theatres. It is an outdoor dining place offering local hawker fare. It is a popular venue for both locals and tourists alike because of the strategic location, and the only place in the area to offer local food at reasonable prices. People can go for a walk or catch a play either before or after a meal. The prices are also cheaper compared to the prices at the restaurants in the area.

It has been a while since my friends and I dined there. So we decided to go to the promenade for a walk along the bay and then go to the Gluttons bay for dinner.

There are about a dozen stalls in Gluttons bay selling local favourites. We decided to order some dishes from the 'Zi Char' (wok fried) stall to share. In this way, we can sample a few dishes. In Chinese dining, it is normal to share dishes during a meal. It’s called communal dining. We also ordered some satays.
The Sambal Stingray is a local favourite available at any hawker stall specialising in seafood. The 'wings' of the stingray are the best part with stringy but tender meat. The meat is slathered with a chilli paste called sambal. The contents are then wrapped in banana leaves to seal in the moisture, and grilled until the skin is crispy. The sambal is an essential part of the barbecue stingray experience, but if you can't take spicy food, you can always ask them to put the chilli on the side.
They called this honey chicken.
Stir fried sweet potato leaves.
A plate of fried noodles.
Cockles. Another favourite item of the seafood stalls. It used to be even more popular. But since it was found that it could cause hepatitis, it has lost some of its popularity.
Satay - chunks of meat on skewers. It can be chicken, beef, pork or mutton. They are served with peanut sauce, slices of onions and slices of cucumber. You can have a side order of rice cake, - also known as compressed rice to go with the satay.
A tower of the local brew went nicely with the meal.
The food was all right. Nothing exceptional. They certainly, cannot be said to represent local food fare – at least, not in taste.
