Truisms

Aphorisms motivate and inspire because they teach a philosophical or moral truth which is relevant to our experiences in life. The relevance is what makes them fascinating and interesting.

Have a look at today’s selection of truisms. Keep a record of the ones that resonate with you so that you can refer to them in your leisure, or in your time of need.

Little Guilin

Guilin is a prefecture-level city in the Northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. It is most famous for its iconic limestone mountains and caves, making it one of China's most popular tourist destinations.

Singapore has a Guilin too – Little Guilin, or Xiao Guilin (Chinese: 小桂林). Little Guilin is a far cry from the Guilin in China which has long been renowned for its scenery of karst rock formations, crystal clear waters and many caves to explore.

Little Guilin was a granite quarry until the 1980s when mining discontinued. There were plans to develop the disused quarry into a road. However, seeing its slight resemblance to the granite rock formations in Guilin, China – albeit a much smaller version of it, the developers decided to develop the place into a park instead. Soon after, the park came to be known fondly as Little Guilin, or Xiao Guilin (Chinese: 小桂林) by the locals.

Guilin park is not a very big park. But within the little park, “towering rock cliffs make a majestic backdrop to the large lake.” Serene and peaceful, the park is a good place to relax and just chill, or to enjoy a picnic with friends or family.

Flower Dome

The Gardens by the Bay has a Flower Dome. It is one of Gardens by the Bay’s attractions. The conservatory holds the Guinness World Record for the largest glass greenhouse! The temperature in the dome is set at Spring time temperature – from 23C to 25C. So, it is eternal Spring in the dome.

This giant conservatory is home to over 32,0000 plants belonging to over 160 different species. It features a flower field with a changing display of flowers of the season, every two months or so, and eight other gardens, namely The Baobabs, Succulent Garden, Australian Garden, South African Garden, South American Garden, Olive Grove, California Garden and the Mediterranean Garden. These eight gardens exhibit exotic flowers and plants from the Mediterranean and semi-arid regions from five different continents. Ranging from olive trees to orchids to the endangered African Baobab to the Birds-of-Paradise; Flower Dome aims at educating visitors about the importance of conservation and biodiversity.

The spectacular display of beautiful flowers and plants sourced from different regions makes for a unique experience.

Some photos from the Flower dome.

The roof is fitted with specially selected glass that allows optimal light in for plants while minimizing solar heat, allowing the conservatory to be cooled more efficiently. Covered with 3332 glass panels, it’s volume is equivalent to 75 Olympic-sized swimming pools, and can accommodate up to 1,000 people.

Some thoughts on Life

Is life fair? Is life good? Life is not fair, nor unfair. Life is not good, nor bad either. Life is indifferent. Life goes on, regardless – it doesn’t care – one way or the other. It is up to you to make the best of life, of your life. It is up to you to give your life meaning and purpose.
Life isn’t always fair. Some people are born into better environments, some people have better genetics. Some are in the right place at the right time. If you’re trying to change your life, all of this is irrelevant. All that matters is that you accept where you are, figure out where you want to be, and then do what you can, today and every day, to hold your head high and keep moving forward. - Lori Deschene

As the sun rules the day and the moon governs the night, so too, we are connected by: the air that we breathe, light that we see and the darkness that follows. Life is too short to waste it on disagreements. Surely, we can all agree to disagree. So let us find a common ground, form a union and spread joy, happiness and freedom around the world for the benefit of you, me and the future generations to come. - Raymond Beresford Hamilton

Barringtonia Racemosa

Barringtonia racemosa is also known as powder-puff tree, common Putat, Fish-Killer Tree, Fish-Poison Tree, Freshwater Mangrove, Putat Ayam, Putat Kampong, and Small-Leaved Barringtonia.

It has attractive red and white flowers on long, hanging flowering shoots. The flowers are night-blooming, fragrant and have filamentous stamens that are white, pink or red. They have reddish fruits that resemble figs.

The plant is evergreen and it can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, making it suitable for most sites, in the tropics. They are ornamental and usually seen in parks, gardens and along the roadsides.

The bark and fruits are poisonous. I guess that’s why the birds leave them alone.

Smile

A smile brightens up not only your face but your whole being. It does wonders for your appearance. It will give you youthfulness and optimism that beauty treatments or counselling sessions never could. Smiling is free therapy, and also a quick and inexpensive way to change your looks.

A smiling face is a beautiful face, always pleasant to look at. It warms the hearts of the people around you. Your smile itself is a reason for others to smile too. Better to be the one who smiled than the one who didn't smile back. Be someone else’s sunshine. Be the reason someone smiles today.

A smile makes you feel good, and when you feel good, your good vibes attract good things to you. Your smile is of no value to anyone until it is given away. So, draw in the breath of life, and as you breathe, smile.

Nobody needs a smile so much as the one who has none to give. So get used to smiling heart-warming smiles, and you will spread sunshine in a sometimes dreary world. - Lawrence G. Lovasik

Before you put on a frown, make absolutely sure there are no smiles available. - Jim Beggs

All the statistics in the world can’t measure the warmth of a smile. - Chris Hart

A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship. - Unknown

Learn to smile at every situation. See it as an opportunity to prove your strength and ability. - Joe Brown

One of the ceaseless wonders of the world is the power of a smile. - Malcom Forbes

Sometimes just a smile on our face can help to make this world a better place. - Robert Alan

A smile means a lot more than laughter because it is a true reflection of emotions. Laughter is just a by-product of humour. - Tiela Selepe

Snippets of Wisdom

Proverbs, axioms, maxims... these short sentences speak volumes to me when I was only a kid and barely able to grasp the full meaning of them all. They motivated me to keep a record of them, and I have been doing that since I learned the beauty and wisdom in these proverbs, axioms and maxims. I am still doing it now, collecting proverbs and quotes that resonate with me. I believe proverbs, maxims and axioms have shaped me into who I am today. For that, I will always be passionate about them.

Take a look at this week's selection, and take a moment to think what each phrase means. You might learn something new and valuable.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ is an art exhibition featuring 40 local artists. The exhibition presents a ‘rich tapestry of expressions that challenge conventional notions of beauty and value’. Viewers are invited to ‘explore a diverse array of artistic practices, celebrating both the unconventional and the traditional while fostering an inclusive and vibrant artistic ecosystem’.

A friend of mine is one of the 40 whose artworks are on exhibit. So, I thought I would drop by and have a look. I am not artistically inclined. But, I have been to a few art exhibitions over the years, and I understand that the word ‘Art’ has far-reaching meanings. I understand too that one man’s art might be another’s trash. For this exhibition, the title says it all.

Here are some of the works on exhibit. Here are some of the works on exhibit. They are just some of the exhibits which made me scratched my head when I looked at them. No doubt they represent something to the artists.
The exhibition is on at 105 Desker road until the 24 of October.
