Creepers and Climbers

Creeping plants, or "creepers", are generally considered to be small, viny plants that grow close to the ground. They are also referred to as procumbent plants – meaning, stems that trail along the ground without rooting.

Like the name suggests, ‘Creepers’ are plants that grow horizontally, instead of vertically. However, there are some plants with "creeper" in their names which are vigorous climbers.

The general use for a creeping plant is as a ground cover. Those that bloom heavily not only serve practical purposes like erosion control, and weed suppression, it also add great beauty to the landscape. Because they stay low to the ground, creeping plants are also used as edging plants, or borders.

Creeper plants can be ‘trained to climb a structure’ if they are long enough. You can build the structure, and then guide the plant to grow in the direction you want them. But most true creepers are smaller plants that seem to simply to crawl "on their bellies" along the ground. These usually make good covers. In fact, many of the highly prized creeping plants are flowering ground covers. However, there are also many creepers that are invasive or problematic, and are not desirable plants to grow.

Climbers are another kind of vine plants. They get off the ground on their own, provided that there is some kind of support in place, whether natural (such as a tree) or artificial structures.

While climbers are often capable of climbing without human intervention, the exact way in which a vine climbs will have a lot to do with what kind of support it finds, or what support you give it.

This is called Rangoon Creeper. I guess this is one good example of a plant with the name creeper in it, but is also a vigorous climber.

Golden pothos, also known as money plants, are climbers.

Here's another good example of a climber. The plant , which I know not the name of, was able to climb up a palm tree.

I do not know if the following are climbers or creepers. If I know their names, I can look them up, but I don't know what they are.

A structure guided them to grown.

Creepers, or climbers, when properly guided adds colour to a place and they provide shades too.

Ropes were used as support the plants to climb.

The fence is the support.
