Success in Life

Mark Twain said, “To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence.” This might sound a bit contradictory, but it is a truism as it is.

In all our endeavours, only when we are confident that we will be successful, are we willing to pursue our objectives. When we see our objectives as easy to reach, and are ignorant of the hardship and obstacles, we are more willing to forge ahead.

If we see that the journey to our goals is fraud with hardship and obstacles, it might put us off. We might tell ourselves it is not worth the trouble, or we might feel that we are not capable enough to overcome the obstacles. Hence, we give up on our goals.

When problems surfaced after we have embarked on our goals, it is too late to give up. We have no alternative but to deal with the problems as they come, one way or another. We do the best we can. This is where we realize we actually have what it takes – that we have the potential to be successful. But had we seen all the problems before we start, we might not have started at all. Hence, to succeed, we need ignorance and confidence.
