Choose Your Words

Words are free. It’s how you use them, that may cost you. We know once the words are uttered, there is no way to recall them, no matter how sorry we are. They can be only forgiven, not forgotten. Hibiscus Flower

According to Wikipedia, Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family Malvaceae. The genus is quite large, comprising several hundred species that are native to warm temperate, tropical, and semi-tropical regions throughout the world.

Hibiscus have dark green leaves; flowers are big, colourful, and trumpet-shaped, with colours ranging from white to pink, red, orange, yellow, peach. They bloom throughout the year. They are widely cultivated as ornamental plants for their showy flowers, or used as landscape shrubs.

Hibiscus are hardy, versatile plants in tropical conditions. They are easy to plant. Cut a section of a branch and stick it in the soil. In its early stage, make sure they have enough water. They do not need a lot of attention once they start growing.

Dinner At Ernest's

Dinner at Ernest’s are always something I look forward to. It is a time to catch up with old friends, to see how they are doing. Time is moving on. We are all getting on too. The fact that we are still meeting and catching up after all these years (we have known each other since 1986), shows there is some affinity between us. We all appreciate the opportunity to get together whenever we can.

Thanks to Ernest, who loves to cook and entertain, we have a place where we can gather and be ourselves. During such times, there is always plenty to eat, and drink, between the talk and laughter.

As usual, Ernest cooked us a scrumptious meal. We had...

Claypot rice.

Braised lamb with herbs & spices
Fried pork belly with garlic
Pan fried prawn with seasoned garlic/salt/pepper.
Chicken soup. The chicken was somewhere in there.
For those who arrived earlier in the afternoon, Ernest prepared a pot of sweet potato with dried longan and dumpling soup for us.
The day went by very quickly between the eating, drinking and talking. Needless to say, we all had a great time.

Cheeky Humour

People

We cannot judge people by their looks. Good looking people does not necessarily mean they have a good heart. Neither can we judge people by how they talk. There are people who can talk the birds down from the tree. They do not necessarily harbour good intentions. So, looks and words aside, the only way to judge a person is through their actions. As they say, action speaks louder than words.

People are more complex and complicated than meets the eye. You can look to the one in the mirror for a testament.

Here are some truisms about people.

Floral Display

The ‘Dahlia Dreams’ flower display in the Flower Dome in the Gardens by the Bay is on until the 17th of March. Because it was Chinese New Year, they also included a display of flowers that are considered auspicious for the New Year – flowers (apart from Dahlia), like Cymbidium, Celosia, Camellia, Anthurium, Chrysanthemum, Hydrangea, Peony...

Lanterns In the Gardens

Some lanterns displayed at the Gardens by the Bay during Chinese New Year. They are lovely, and they stood out prominently in the dark. A lot of thought and creativity was given to the creation of these lanterns. They are great works of art. You will appreciate the lanterns more if you know the story behind their creation, or what the creation was supposed to mean. Unfortunately, I do not have that information. But the gist of it all is harmony, progress and prosperity to the people and nation.

God of Prosperity

Some photographs of God of Prosperity in the Gardens by the Bay.
The God of Wealth, or God of Prosperity’s name, (also known as Caishen, a direct translation in Mandarin), is often invoked during the Chinese New Year celebrations.

“Caishen – literally ‘God of Wealth’, is the mythological figure worshiped in the Chinese folk religion and Taoism. He has been identified with many historical figures, viewed as his embodied forms. It is unclear whether they are genuine historical figures, though most of the stories agree that Caishen's most popular incarnation lived during the early Qin Dynasty.” - Wikipedia

Although it’s a mythological figure, people still secretly wish, that there is a God of Wealth and somehow, someday they will benefit from the God’s benevolence.

If you are wondering about the suspended dragon that swirl around the supertrees alongside the God of Prosperity, this is the Year of the Dragon. During the Chinese New Year lanterns of the animal’s year are featured in the celebrations.

In the Chinese zodiac, the Year of the Dragon is especially auspicious, with those born under this sign believed to embody the dragon's positive qualities. Individuals born this year are believed to embody traits of ambition, charisma, flexibility and adaptability.
