The Rail Corridor

The rail corridor also known as the green corridor was a 24 kilometre long railway. It used to be a means of transport between Singapore and its northern neighbour, and also for transporting goods. This was discontinued in 2011. Since then, Singapore has been developing and enhancing the track/trail for easy access. It is now a popular trail with hikers, bikers, walkers and joggers.

I have explored parts of the trail. This was another part of the trail that I explored. It is the centre portion of the trail. For Singaporeans on here, it is from the Railway mall to the Bukit Timah hill section.

The railway corridor is also a part of the rich heritage of Singapore. The Truss Bridge (the only one remaining in Singapore) is one of them. This Truss Bridge dates back to 1932.

The trail for this section begins here.
It is another 13 km to the end of the trail. Maybe, on a fine day when I feel up to it, I will do that.
Pretty flowers in the wild.
This is what the trail is like for most of the way.
Beautiful gigantic ferns.
Ferns in the wild are common here. That's the type of climate they thrive in.
Steps leading to other trails on the way.
Residential area off the trail.
A biker. I picked a weekday and in the mid-afternoon for my walk. So, there were not too many people around.
This was where I turned off down the steps on the forefront.

Living With Covid in Singapore – Two Months Later

This was the post on ‘Living with Covid’. Take a look if you are interested. 👉 Living With Covid

Two months ago, Singapore took the bold step to ‘Live with Covid’. The decision was met with many criticisms. Some people think that the government is losing the battle with the Corona virus, and hence giving in to the fight. From a country that was lauded for her dealing with the virus, Singapore was suddenly the country that failed miserably in her fight against Covid.

However, the decision to ‘Live with Covid’ was not made in a time of despair nor without a plan. The plan was hatched when it was found that people who were vaccinated suffered only mild or no symptoms when they were infected with the Corona virus. That started off the campaign to get people vaccinated. Only when more than 80 percent of the population had been vaccinated did they reveal that it is time to return to some normality in life.

Looking at the situation all over the world now, the Corona virus is going to be with us for a while yet. Lock-downs work but we cannot afford to be on lock-downs and living with restrictions indefinitely. Life has to go on. People need to eat, to earn a livelihood. People are weary of all the restrictions. Since vaccinations offer some protection against the virus, it makes sense that once people are vaccinated, they should be allowed more freedom to move about.

Those who were vaccinated six months ago were encouraged to go for their booster shots, to add another layer to their protection, since it was found that the vaccination slowly loses its effectiveness after six months.

Hence, our Covid-19 task force came up with the plan to ‘Live With Covid’. However, they made it very clear that the easing into ‘Living With Covid’ would be gradual. It doesn’t mean that we throw caution to the winds and continue with life like before the Covid days. In short, masks are still mandatory, and social distancing is still everyone’s responsibility. The advice is still not to go out unless necessary.

The first phase of the plan was called the Stabilization Phase. The focus was on vaccination. Get everyone vaccinated. Those who were vaccinated were allowed, amongst other things to dine in restaurants, maximum two to a table. They were allowed to participate in activities and social events. The list of what was allowed and what was not is too long to go into, and not important here.

In case you are wondering why are there still so many restrictions when it is ‘Living With Covid’, well the main cause for concern is once we opened up, there was bound to be a surge of infections. The hospitals and health care system would not be able to cope. If that happened, all other non Covid treatments would have to be delayed. We don’t want that to happen. We don’t want to tax the health care system.

Thus, part of the Stabilization Phase was to let those who were infected and had only mild symptoms, or are asymptomatic to self-isolate at home, instead of taking up spaces in the hospitals. With this plan in place, although there was an increased in numbers of infections, and quite significantly too, the health system was spared.

Unfortunately, just as the plan was put into action, the Delta+ variant threw a spanner into the works. Instead of the numbers of infections decreasing, or remaining stable, we saw a marked increase in numbers instead. The Delta+ variant is even more transmissible. Even those who were vaccinated were not spared. However, most suffered only minor symptoms, and there were quite a number who were asymptomatic.

Although things seem abysmal, the number of infections were within expectations. Taking the Delta+ variant into account, the task force did a projection of the probability of number of cases in the coming days, and what would be the worse case scenario. And if the worse case scenario happened, they would have to rethink their plans. Luckily, till today, everything has been within expectation.

So, on to Phase Two of ‘Living With Covid’ – the Transition Phase. We are now allowed to dine in restaurants – up to five persons per table. Each household is allowed up to five visitors per day – up from two. The capacity for social events and activities has also been increased. But, only if the participants are vaccinated. Otherwise, they have to take an Antigen Rapid Test first before participating.

The rationale given for the easing of restrictions now, is that we are coming to the year end festivities. If they eased up at the end of the year, there would likely be a ‘blast’ of celebrations, and the number of infections would likely soar again. By easing restrictions gradually, they can better monitor the situation. And depending how the situation turns out, they can decide whether to ease more of the restrictions or go back to the Stabilization phase. It all sounds reasonable, and practical.

Many countries are now opening up and recent figures show that the numbers of infections are rising all over the world again. There is a fear that with the winter season, and the year end festivities round the corner, things are going to get worse. Countries like Austria and the Netherlands are bringing back restrictions and lock-downs. And what do people do? They go out and protest, unmasked! Why do people never learn?

At the initial stage of the pandemic, people were complacent. They dismissed the pandemic as ‘a little flu’. Some people still think so.

I can’t help but think that if the world had reacted to virus like Wuhan in China did, we could have seen the end of pandemic by now. Perhaps if the Corona virus were some flesh eating virus, like in the movies, people would have taken it more seriously. Unfortunately, it is just a ‘little flu’ that has taken millions of life, and no end is in sight.

Anyway, I digress. So, as of yesterday, Singapore is in the Transition Phase of ‘Living With Covid’. The Covid-19 Task Force will monitor the situation. Hopefully, the plan will work and we can gradually ease back to some sort of normalcy in life.

Get vaccinated because vaccination will give you some protection. If you were still unfortunate enough to catch the virus, at least you would only have very mild symptoms if you are basically healthy with a healthy immune system. It would “turn something like a deadly virus into something like a seasonal flu that we're all familiar with” as one vaccinated Covid survivor put it. And wear a mask when you are out.

Shadow Hunting

It was hot and humid – a typical day in the tropics. As I emerged from the underpass, on my walk, I saw this nice shadow of the wall and railing. I was glad I had my phone with me. I whipped out my phone fired off a few shots with my phone camera.

These were the best three shots.

A Mammoth Project

g) The clips of the glass shelf corroded some time ago, and I have been looking to replace the clips. I want to use back the same holes on the wall, so I need clips with single screws. Most shops I go to do not have anything like that. There was a shop that has bigger clips with two screws. Those are no good for me.

Eventually, a friend alerted me to them on an online site when he was looking for something else. They were not the same clips as the previous ones. But I think they will do nicely. Since, the said friend was ordering some stuff from the site, he added the clips to his cart. That was mighty nice of him.

The day of reckoning came. I am glad the screw size is the same. One thing with ordering stuff online. You never know what arrives. Anyway, all fits nicely and it was quite straight forward putting up the shelf.

And what was so mammoth about that? Nah, that was just click bait.

Another Rescue Mission

![1.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXSNsomymD6sof4EuNrL6ysmhkN7dbFLsA1pzmS5KpeAJ/1.jpg) Here’s another orchid that needs rescuing. I have had it for almost 5 years now. It has done well and rewarded me with four blooms. But recently, it hasn’t been doing well. There were brown spots on the leaves. I scraped off the brown spots and for a while, it looked like I might have saved the plant.

I was wrong, The condition worsened and it got so bad I had to sacrifice the plant in the hope that it would not affect the remaining plant.

Unfortunately, before too long, the other plant also suffered the same problem. Some website suggested spraying the leaves with apple cider vinegar mixed with water. It has either no effect, or maybe I left it too late.
There were three leaves - two not looking very good, and one looking poorly.
Then, there was two leaves looking poorly.
And then, there was one leaf looking poorly and one on the way out.
The other day, I was thinking I will re-pot it, and hope that would turn things around. Just as I was about to re-pot it, I saw this little shoot growing from the base of the other plant which had died by the same affliction. In view of that, I decided to clip the plant and see how the new shoot fares first. I will postpone the re-potting.
My questions are:
1. Does anyone knows what these brown spots are and how to eliminate them?
2. Is this a good time to re-pot the orchid or should I wait until the new plant has grown a little?

If you have an idea or a suggestion, do let me know. Thanks!

Interesting Wooden Seats

I came upon these wooden seats when I was visiting the ‘Flower Dome’ and ‘Cloud Forest’ – two popular attractions of the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

I like them. I think they are fresh, and interesting. Something different from the normal sitting benches.

The first picture is of a sculptured chair. I am not even sure if that is the way to call it. But I am sure you know what I mean. There are more of these all over the garden. But because they are exposed to the elements, they are not as polished as these ones which are indoors.

Reflections

Life is only a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see and be. - Trudy Symeonakis Visotsky

Joining the Reflection Hunter Community in another hunt for reflections.

These are mirrors mounted above the display hall – where there is a display of crystals. The permanent display of the crystals is part of an attraction of the Cloud Forest. There was a brief mention of how the crystals were formed and came to be.

It was rather dark in there, as crystal caves should be, which led me to think the mirrors were used for adding some light to the place. It wouldn’t be very appropriate to have too much electricity in there.

Victims of the Pandemic

I was out at People’s Park Center, a complex in the vicinity of Chinatown, getting a new phone last Monday when I thought I would swing by Chinatown to have a look at how the place is doing.

I saw that the ‘Food Street” - a food place selling local favourites is now closed. But it didn’t come as too much of a surprise. They were already struggling before the pandemic, and the pandemic just drove the nail in the coffin.

I have dined and drank there with friends a few times. It was quite pleasant sitting out, dining and drinking with good company. It has a relaxed atmosphere. So it’s a shame that it had to close. Hopefully, someone or some organization will take over the place when the pandemic has settled down, and do a better job with the place.

This unfortunate Tea Café place is another victim of the pandemic. They couldn’t have opened at a worse time. I think they opened during the early days of the pandemic, when things were still not too bad and there were still no restrictions. And then the pandemic hit town. I empathize and feel sorry for the owner, whoever he or she is.

Looks like this building has been given a new coat of pain recently. I still do not know what goes on on the second, third and fourth level of the building.
All was quiet – in the shops as well as outside the street. Mostly due to the lack of tourists and also the restrictions on dining out. I think the rain also plays a part in keeping people away.
My friend and I were looking for a place to rest our legs and have a drink. The restaurant looked as good a place as any. There were only a dozen or so people in there. Plenty of tables and seats left. Their beers were on discount 1 pint for 1 pint. Well that worked out nicely. We had 2 pints each before we went on our way. That was a nice way to wrap up an evening of shopping, dinner, and a quick walk around Chinatown.
