Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister and founding father of Singapore, passed away on the 3rd of march 2015. He and his party took Singapore, little more than a backward fishing island back in 1965, and transformed it into what it is today. The result speaks for itself.

Unless you are a Singaporean, and grew up during the early years of Independence, it might be a bit difficult to envisage and appreciate what Mr Lee has done.

Mr Lee was clever, brave, bright and brilliant of mind, far-sighted,  determined, no-nonsensical, and one who is not afraid to speak his mind - all qualities of a great leader. He was also a doting father and loving husband. He devoted his life to Singapore, moulding, shaping the island through the years, improving the life of the people. And rightfully, Singaporeans mourn his passing.

During his Lying in State in Parliament House, people queued for up to 10 hours just to pay their last respects and say good-bye to him. When the funeral procession left Parliament House, people lined the 15.4 km route in the afternoon amid a torrential downpour, shouting his name and waving the Singapore flag. A very touching scene indeed.

Dignitaries and foreign leaders, near and far were amongst the admirers of Mr Lee. They, too, came to pay their last respects, and say their good-byes.

Words can’t describe my respect and gratitude for this great man and great leader, and for what he went through, what he did for Singapore. Without Mr Lee, there would be no Singapore such as it is today. He made me proud to be a Singaporean.

Thank you Mr Lee. I am forever grateful to you! You will be missed!
