Apparently it is known locally as 'Bunga Tahi Ayam’ (Malay: chicken poo flower) due to the pungent smell of its crushed leaves. I must remember to go and give it a try – crush some leaves and see if they smell like chicken poo.
Lantana flowers are popular due to their ability to bloom with showy flowers all year round in hot climates. The colourful Lantana flowers appear in pretty clusters, and attract not only butterflies, but birds and bees too! Birds eat the round, black fruit and disperse the seeds.
Lantana is recommended for novice growers who want an ever-blooming plant because they are fairly easy to grow. They are low-maintenance and can tolerate poor soils, dry conditions and scorching heat. They are also very versatile, and can be used for hedging, hanging baskets, ground cover, and ornamentals.
I walk past these on my walks. They are really pretty with their different shades and colours of flowers, and are very popular with the butterflies.
