Old Friends

There is only one thing better than making a new friend, and that is keeping an old one. Old friends understand us in a way the world never does. Everything is good when new, but friends, when old. Friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

You can go through life and make new friends every year – every month practically – but there was never any substitute for those friendships of childhood that survive into adult years. Those are the ones in which we are bound to one another with hoops of steel. - Alexander McCall Smith

There is no friend like the old friend who has shared our morning days; no greeting like his welcome, no homage like his praise. Fame is the scentless sunflower, with gaudy crown of gold; but friendship is the breathing rose, with sweets in every fold. - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Forsake not an old friend, for the new is not comparable to him. A new friend is as new wine; when it is old, thou shalt drink it with pleasure. - Unknown

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Make new friends but keep the old ones; one is silver and the other’s gold. - Unknown

To meet an old friend in a distant land is like refreshing rain after a drought. - Chinese Proverb

The best mirror is an old friend. - George Herbert

Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend – or a meaningful day. - Dalai Lama
