Satay by the Bay

Satay by the Bay is an open air food place. It is a good place to sample the many local cuisine at affordable prices. And of course, to eat satays. But, tucked in the quietest corner of the Gardens by the bay, and not most easily accessible, they lose the edge. Still, a fair number of visitors to the Garden find their way there to sample the local dishes.

I went there for dinner with a friend recently. We had ‘Tze Char’ and some satays. ‘Tze Char’ is a Hokkien term used in Singapore to describe a Chinese food stall which provides a wide selection of common and affordable dishes which approximate home-cooked meals.

‘Satays’ are small pieces of meat – it could be chicken, lamb, beef or pork, grilled on a skewer and served with peanut sauce. It is a popular local dish - good as a 'side' dish, something extra, or for a light meal.

Chicken, and pork satay (not distinguishable from the picture), served with slices of onion, cucumber and peanut sauce.

Stir fried kai lan vegetables with garlic.
Tofu - bean curd with minced pork. This was surprisingly good. A little crispy on the outside and silky smooth on the inside.
Beef stir-fried with ginger, onions, spring onions and garlic. It was a bit on the bland side. Not quite what we were used to, when we had the dish at other places.
That was our meal, together with a bowl of rice. All washed down with a jug of beer between us.
Satay by the Bay, although a little out of the way is usually fairly busy during meal hours. But on that day, the place was rather empty. I had assumed it was because it was raining and that we were early. But according to the guy behind the beer counter, it doesn't get much busier. He said such had been the sad situation since Covid-19 reared its ugly head. Very sad indeed!
