Letting Go

We often hear people talking about letting go. What does letting go mean? What are we letting go?

Generally, letting go means to let go of our attachment to whatever is holding us back, or making us unhappy. It could our possessions, or it could be our past, the unpleasant memories, the emotional hurt, pain, and sometimes, the people in our lives... Anything that deprive us of our peace, happiness and freedom. These are negative energies that laden us and hold us back. Letting them go, we are free to move on.

Letting go does not mean giving up, but rather, it is accepting that there are things that cannot be. And it is better to let go of the things that can no longer be fixed. Not all things can be fixed. If we force it, or to try to fix it, things will only get worse.

Holding on is being brave, but sometimes moving on makes you stronger! In the process of letting go you will lose many things, but you will find yourself. Be strong enough to let go, and patient enough to wait for what you deserve.

The first step to letting go is to understand that nothing is permanent. If you own something, chances are that at some point, you are going to lose that thing.

Understanding this simple fact, the next thing to do is to practice non-attachment. If you are attached to something, you will find that it is difficult to let go. But if you don't feel attachment, then letting go is easier. You will still feel its lost, but being able to accept the inevitable, you are also able to accept that it is time to let go.

Some things are hard to let go of, I know. But what’s the point of holding onto something that’s causing you unhappiness, or somebody who has already let go of you? Holding on to your past will keep you from your future. Your future can be as bright as you want it to be. It holds so much promise, why hold on to a painful past? You’ll never get what you truly deserve if you keep holding on to the past.

Letting go doesn’t mean that you become a man with no feelings. Rather, it is arriving at, and understanding things for what they really are. It is about putting your personal, and emotional feelings aside, and accepting the natural progress of life.

Once in a while, do a 'spring cleaning'. Throw out, or let go of all things that do not add value to your life, all the things that are dragging you down and keeping you from moving forward. Think about any attachments that are depleting your emotional reserves. Let them go. Let there be closure, so that you can begin a new chapter.

Let go. Why do you cling to pain? There is nothing you can do about the wrongs of yesterday. It is not yours to judge. Why hold on to the very thing which keeps you from hope and love? - Leo Buscaglia

Let go. The longer you live in the past, the less future you have to enjoy. - Unknown

Let go, or be dragged. - Zen Proverb

You will find that it is necessary to let things go; simply for the reason that they are heavy. - Unknown

Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free. - Thích Nhat Hanh
