Nice Reflections

The stadium sports complex underwent a major renovation recently. This unit on road level is still being renovated. Workers inside the unit were still hard at work. The inside of the glass facade was pasted with white paper giving the glass a very nice reflective surface.

From the reflection, you can see a clear image of what’s outside the unit, and across the road.

These units were on the upper level. Most of them are still unoccupied.
This is the entrance on the second level. A ‘glass structure’ – maybe facade is more accurate, reflecting the housing flats and the sky.
I had a quick walk around the second level. It has quite a big area, with many units still undergoing renovation.

Shadows Of Guardrails

Shadows of guardrails. These would be my entry for this week’s Shadow Hunter Contest. Guardrails are for safety measures. They guard you, and keep you on track so that you don’t walk off track into the drain, or off a slope, or to keep you off the property.

I took these while on my walk. The first set of guardrails keep you from toppling down the slope, and the second set of guardrails keep you from walking into the canal.

Celosia Spicata

These are Celosia Spicata. The cylindrical flower spikes look like wheat, which is why they are also known as wheat celosia.

I saw them in the Flower Dome in the Gardens by the Bay. The following information was from a sign beside the plants.

"Celosia spicata, also known as Wheat Celosia, got its common name from it's distinctive, erect flower spikes reminiscent of a sheaf of wheat. Formed out of abundant cylindrical inflorescences on branch tips above the foliage, the spikes may be red, pink, purple of bi-coloured and often develop a metallic silver sheen at their bases."

Roses Are Red...

… and at least eight other colours – white, yellow, orange, pink…

As the most popular flower in the world, besides symbolising love and passion, it is also commonly used to represent beauty, politics and war.

At the floral display, there was information on how Roses can be used to express your feelings for someone special. Here’s a quick guide to help you convey your message without needing to use any words at all. So, if you want to use roses to represent your feelings, don’t use the wrong coloured roses. It could be embarrassing.

Rose Colour Guide

Cream (off white) – Charm / thoughtfulness
Yellow – Joy / Friendship / Happiness
Orange – Desire / Enthusiasm
Salmon Pink – Desire / Excitement
Pink – Grace / Sweetness / Elegance / Admiration
Red – Love / Passion / Beauty
White – Purity / Innocence / Hope / Respect
Deep Pink – Appreciation / Gratitude
Purple – Enchantment / Beauty

Another interesting trivia I picked up from the ‘Rose Romance’ floral display was in regards to the phrase – “Stop and smell the roses”. The saying is a reminder to slow down and be in the present. But, apparently, "the fragrance of roses helps to calm one’s nerves and raise one’s spirits". The aroma from roses is said to be helpful in reducing stress levels and boosting self-esteem! So, there is real benefit in stopping to smell the roses. The next time you come across a rose, stop and smell it. See if that raises your spirit.

A rose smells just as sweet by any other name. I think it was Shakespeare who said that, or something to that effect.

"Rose Romance" - Part II

“I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden…..” But I did promise you more pictures of roses from the floral display. So, welcome back! In case you missed my post yesterday, I was talking about my visit to the floral display of roses at the Flower Dome in the ‘Gardens by the Bay’ in Singapore. The plethora of roses at the display was impressive. You can have a look at it 👉 HERE

There was also a fair amount of information on roses. Here are some interesting trivia about roses from the display.

“The rose is the most popular flower in the world. Symbolising love and passion, it is also commonly used to represent beauty, politic and war.”

“The rose is the national flower of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, Iran, Iraq, Luxembourg, Maldives, Romania, Slovakia and the United States of America. It is also the state flower of five U.S. states – Iowa, Georgia, North Dakota, New York and Oklahoma.”

“The Latin term ‘sub rosa’ was used by Romans in ancient times to represent secrecy or confidentiality. It was common to see paintings of roses on the ceiling, or to hang roses overhead in Roman banquet rooms or council chambers. This acted as a reminder that anything said under the roses was to remain a secret.”

“Did you know that all roses are edible? They are commonly used to make jams, syrups and infused water. The popular local beverage, bandung, is made with rose syrup and evaporated milk, and has proven to be a flavourful and refreshing thirst-quencher.”
