Don’t Let History Repeats Itself

History will repeat itself, if people do not learn from history. Life will keep repeating the lessons until people learned them.

Wikipedia recorded a fourth minor wave in Spring 1920 which occurred in isolated areas: New York City, the United Kingdom, Austria, Scandinavia, South American islands.

So, the Spanish flu lasted about 2 years – from Spring 1918 to Spring 1920. Do we want the Coronavirus to last for two years? Surely not. No country could afford a second wave of the Coronavirus, let alone a third.

There have been concerns that another deadlier wave of the Coronavirus might come back in Autumn this year. Maybe the people who said that based their theory from the pandemic in 1918. And it is quite possible there would be a second wave, if people are complacent, and do not learn from history, from the pandemic in 1918.

In some countries, the Coronavirus, or Covid-19 might have seemed to have plateaued, and the infections decreasing daily, but this is no time for complacency. This is not time to relax the controls yet. One slip and all the efforts of the past few months would go to waste. And right now, no country wants to take the risk of another wave of Coronavirus. The first wave itself is crippling enough. It brought the world to its knees – and life to a standstill.

Europe seemed worse hit than the rest of the world. Now, people are beginning to question why the developing countries are getting off easy. I don’t think they are. I think the wave is just building up, and the longer it is building up, the bigger it is going to be. I believe they are not doing extensive testing, nor have the means to do so. Their figures are probably under reported – though not necessarily deliberately. For example, if someone drop dead from flu-like symptoms, and he wasn’t tested for the Coronavirus, then officially, he didn’t die of Covid-19. Well, that is my personal, uneducated guess. So, there is no point going into that. However, if I were correct, then this could be just the beginning of the pandemic. Let’s hope I am wrong.

Let us all work together to rid this virus once and for all. If we have to be locked down for another month or two, so be it. Better that than let the situation drag on for another year or so. Some people feel that life is a risk and if they caught it, they caught it. This is a wrong attitude. Not everything has to be about you. It was never about you anyway.

Consider this – you were infected, you passed it on to your loved ones, to the people around you, in your community. You fell sick. You needed medical attention. You survived, maybe not. Your loved ones, they fell sick. They suffered. Maybe they survived, maybe they didn’t. What happens if you got well, but they didn’t. Can you forgive yourself? What happens if it were you who started another cluster, another wave – all because of your selfishness. If, and when that happened, I am sure you won’t feel so smug. You would feel more like a schmuck.

Over here, in Singapore, originally, we would be coming out of our ‘circuit breaker’ days tomorrow, but that was extended for another month, when the authorities found too many unlinked cases of the infections. That meant there could be asymptomatic carriers in the community spreading the virus unknowingly. However, the number of community infections have improved, and they will slowly ease the measures from the 5th of May. May the situation continue to improve.

Here are some Coronavirus related memes. They are not mine. I picked them up from Whatsapp messengers and Facebook pages. Where possible I have sourced them. I hope this will bring on a chuckle, and help ease your mood for a while. There is not much we can do about the present circumstances. So, just relax and enjoy yourself as much as you. Find something to keep you occupy. Be creative. You might find that you enjoy it too much.
