Funan Mall

Funan Mall was formerly known as Funan – The IT Mall, or Funan Centre to the locals. Completed in 1985, the mall specialised in electronics and IT-related goods. It was a more upmarket competitor of Sim Lim Square, another shopping mall specialising in computers and electronic goods, which catered more to those seeking more budget purchases.

Due to the popularity of online shopping, business at the mall had been declining over the years, forcing tenants to close down. The mall was initially planned to be renovated in 2014. However, it was later slated for demolition, and redevelopment. It opened for the last time on 30 June 2016.

The new commercial building known only as Funan was built on its former site. Originally slated to be reopened in 2020, the building was re-opened in June 2019, and rebranded itself as a lifestyle mall. It aims to be a place for the hip and trendy to hang out.

While having a look in the mall, we came upon this – a cryptocurrency ATM that allows you to buy and sell cryptocurrency. I was surprised to see this. Nice to know it is there though. Who knows, maybe there will come a day when I need to buy a couple of Bitcoins on the go.

And there was this locker service operated by a robot. I think you hand your things to the robot and it keeps the things in a locker for you. Later on, it will collect your things for you. I am not sure of the details of how it works, but basically, the locker service is robot operated. Quite cool.
There was a rock climbing wall. So, if you are stressed at the office and feel like climbing the walls, puns intended, you can come here – conveniently located in the civic district.
After all the activities, you might want to find a place to eat. Restaurants, fast food, food courts, coffees and sweets… plenty of choices.
A lifestyle mall indeed. Something for everyone.
