Shadows

"In the dark, where do shadows go?" - Orson Scott Card

I was at some art exhibitions in an arcade. To my surprise, I was more interested in the shadows in the galleries than the exhibits. I was clicking away at the shadows while the artist was giving a commentary on the exhibition. I am sure he is as clueless to what I was doing as I was to what the exhibits meant.

Art Exhibitions

I went to an art exhibition recently. Actually, it was a few small exhibitions held together in an arcade. I like art which I can understand or relate to. Unfortunately, most of the exhibitions the other day left me scratching my head. I guess there are many art forms and since I am not an artist, I am therefore not able to appreciate them.

There was an NFT exhibition, complete with instructions on how to set up your own metamask wallet. Here are some of the NFTs that were on exhibit.

These were from another exhibition hall. Abstract art?
These were more relatable.
Sculptures
And then, there was this ‘Brand Love’ exhibition, which was for ‘Adults only’. What propelled the artist to do such an exhibition, I guess only the artist himself will know. I am not posting the exhibits here, because some might find it distasteful. But basically, the exhibits were adult toys tied, some literally to branded sports products like basket balls and such. The purpose of the exhibition totally escaped me.

Singapore 'Then and Now'

Xing Hua Restaurant

On the last day of the Chinese New year, a friend invite me out for dinner. He booked a set menu for four at the Chinese Restaurant – Xing Hua. The restaurant is quite new. None of us had dined with them before, so we do not know what to expect. So, we have no expectations. But the menu looked really good, and we thought we will give it a try. If the food and service are good, it would be another alternative place to go when dining out. And if it is not good, we will not go back.

The set dinner had seven dishes, including dessert.

Since it was the last year of Chinese New Year, there was ‘Yu Sheng’, or raw fish which is basically a simple dish of salad with a few slices of fish. In this case it was abalone slices – so few and so thin we had to search for them. Have a look at my post from two years ago, regarding the story of the ‘Yu Sheng’ and ‘Prosperity Toss’, or ‘Lo Hei’ 👉 HERE Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng. After we had ‘Lo Hei’, we had dinner proper.
Four Treasures double boiled red mushroom with chicken soup. I am not sure what the four treasures were, only that it has something to do with Chinese herbs.
Red grouper steamed with 'heng hwa' bee hoon. Bee hoon is fine vermicelli.
Braised pork knuckle with Chinese cabbage.
King prawns in homemade special sauce.
Roasted pork, and Chinese sausage braised with fragrance rice.
Lastly, after the meal, the dessert – sea coconut and longan pudding.
We were pleasantly surprised by the scrumptious meal. The quality was there. The soup was tasty. The fish was tender and fresh. The prawns were fresh too. The pork knuckle was excellent. They could have been more creative with the dessert though. Sea coconut and longan pudding was a bit plain compared to the other fine dishes.

“Prosperity Toss”, and “Basin Food”

Two food dishes that are popular during the Chinese New Year are the 'Prosperity Toss', also known as 'Lo Hei' in Cantonese, or ‘Yi Sheng’, a salad and raw fish dish, and ‘Basin Food’, or 'Poon Choi' in Cantonese.

That was what we had at one of the gatherings during Chinese New Year. The usual suspects gathered at our friend, Ernest’s house, and he prepared 'Yu Sheng' and ‘Poon Choi’ for dinner.

For starters, we had the ‘Yu Sheng’ which is basically a salad - Julian's of carrots and radish with slices of fish. All diners gave the ingredients a toss while chanting well wishes, before they share the dish.

Ingredients in the ‘poon choi’ includes minced pork n fish paste, braised mushrooms, braised pork, scallop, abalone, broccoli, prawns, sea cucumber. So called 'Poon Choi' because everything is in one pot.
We had 'Yi Sheng' and 'Poon Choi' two years ago and I wrote about them in detail. Have a look at the posts if you are interested.

This year, we had an additional dish of lotus roots, pork ribs soup with dates. This soup is touted to have herbal qualities, nutritious and good for the body.

As with all dinners at Ernest's, it was scrumptious dinner.

Reflections

"The state of your life is nothing more than a reflection of your state of mind." - Wayne Dyer

It was a lovely day. I was strolling in the gardens when I came upon this pond. The water was still and reflected sharply and clearly in the water were the trees and plants at the edge of the pond. Unfortunately, there were a fair bit of dead leaves in the pond. Otherwise the image would have been even better.

Raffles Hotel

The Raffles Hotel was opened in the late 1800s during the colonial days. Since then, it had been through a few renovations, and restorations. It has hosted many stars, celebrities, statesmen and dignitaries.
Last week, there was an art exhibition at the Hotel's arcade. After visiting the art exhibition, I took the opportunity to have a quick look around the courtyard.

Except for some workmen, the courtyard was empty. No guests having afternoon teas. I wondered for a moment if I am allowed to be there. Anyway, a quick tour and I was out of there.

Here are some pictures taken from the second level of the arcade.
