Ponds In The Gardens

Gardens are not complete without ponds. I feel so anyway. In the Gardens by the Bay, there are many ponds, some bigger than others.

This is a reasonably sized one in the Gardens with a water fountain. The pond is surrounded by lush greenery. It is very peaceful here. One could sit quietly and be lost in thought.

Sun Pavilion

The Sun Pavilion in the Gardens by the Bay showcases cacti and succulents, from the deserts and dry shrub-lands. It has a glass roof – not to keep the plants out of the sun, but to keep the plants out of the rain so that they are not exposed to excess water.

Cacti are succulents but not all succulents are cacti! All cacti are flowering plants! But not all succulents are flowering plants. Some flower freely at a young age whilst others take years to bloom for the first time.

New Apartment Blocks

Some new apartments on my walk route. These are conveniently located – five minutes’ walk to a mall and eight minutes’ walk to the train station.

Work is still going on around the surroundings of the blocks. But some residents seem to have moved into some of the apartments, while others are still renovating their apartment.

Flacourtia Inermis aka Batoko Plum

Flacourtia inermis, known commonly as lovi-lovi, or batoko plum, is a species of flowering plant native to the Philippines and Indonesia, but which has naturalized around the edges of tropical Asia and Africa. - Wikipedia

Looks like the batoko plum are in season again. The fruits are round and shiny, green in colour turning to deep red colour upon ripening. They look like maraschino cherries sans the stalks. They are said to be rich in antimicrobial agents, but are too sour and acidic to eat directly.

They look nice on the trees. But they make a mess after they ripen and drop on the ground – especially on the tarmac where they are stepped on by pedestrians or crushed by bicycle wheels.
