“The ‘petals’ of the poinsettia are in fact bracts, or modified leaves, and are usually flaming red, though they also come in white, cream, pink, pale green or are marbled. They surround a central cluster of tiny yellow flowers. In order for the bracts to turn red, they must not receive any light for 12 hours a day, 5 days in a row. This developmental response is known as ‘photoperiodism’.”
