Trees From The Flower Dome

These were pictures from an earlier visit which I never got around to posting them.

Fig Tree

I never thought I would see a fig tree in Singapore. And there I was face to face with one in the flower dome in the Gardens by the Bay. There were figs on it too.

The sign says the botanical name is Ficus carica. Their place of origin is the East Mediterranean and West Asia

Olive Tree

There are a couple of olive trees too. Another tree I didn’t expect to see in the flower dome.

Olive trees originated from the Mediterranean. Their botanical name is Olea europaea.

Some Olive trivia.
Across the world there are over 700 different varieties of olive and around 10 million hectares of olive groves.
Olive trees can live up to 2,000 years old.
It takes an olive tree 25 years to come into full production.
On average one olive fruit will produce one drop of oil.
We consume over 2 million tonnes of olive oil a year.

Pure, unmixed olive oil, is known as virgin. The quality of such oil depends on the pressing process. The first cold pressing produces Extra virgin olive oil, which has very low acidity, while subsequent cold pressing produces virgin olive oil. Further pressing using heat and/or solvents can be obtained, but are of lower quality.

The above information are from the signs beside the trees.

Monkey Puzzle Tree

This tree is called Monkey Puzzle Tree - a funny name for a tree. I don’t know where the name from, or if it has anything to do with monkeys.

Their botanical name is Araucaria araucana, and they originated from Chile. They are also called Chilean pines, and they are evergreens. Chilean pine is the national tree of Chile.

Grass Tree

They are called grass trees. Their botanical name is Xanthorrhoea glauca. They are endemic to Australia. The plant is valued for its many uses.
